zelmo Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I use braid with a fluoro leader often. Braid is usually 15 to 20 lbs and I'll put on a 6 or 8 lb leader. I have been using a uni to uni knot at that end and usually a palomar knot at the terminal end. Most of the time when I get hung up and need to break the line it happens right at the leader knot so I need to re-tie the whole thing again. Is there a better knot to use to tie on the leader, or should I use a weaker knot at the terminal end so it breaks off there? Quote

Jolly Green Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Another vote for the Alberto knot for your leader. I like the Pitzen knot for tying to the hook or lure when using fluoro. I can't seem to keep a palomar from burning/weakening fluoro as I cinch it down, no matter how wet I get it, love it for straight braid though. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 There are several knots what will do the job well. I'll offer this though, regardless of what knots are used throughout the length of your entire rig, when breaking off one's line on a snag, the stress exerted on the entire rig is significant. I'd recommend re-tying all the knots that are subjected to that stress, regardless of whether they fail or not. Not doing so is risking losing a plus size fish; especially if you're using fluorocarbon. A-Jay Quote
nascar2428 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I've been using the triple surgeons knot for the leader and the san diego jam at the hook. No break offs so far. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 I use the Albright, reverse Albright, and Uni-to-Uni for my leaders. Plenty of moisture, and for the Albright(s), plenty of wraps up/down. Uni/uni usually is about 5 wraps for thicker leader, but for my 10 and 15 lb braid mainline, I'll do about 7 wraps. Tie these enough and you can almost do it with your eyes closed, Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 The knots everyone is suggesting is spot on, the alberto is top notch for me. Imho, its not the knot that you should try to change, it sounds like its doing its job just fine. Its the the difference between the two lines. A much heavier line like the one you are using, will easily over power the weaker line. In your case its 15lb vs a 6lb leader. That knot stands no chance. Try to match the two lines a little closer together. But then again if you do want a break off, it should break from the leader. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 Alberto's Knot Definitely! It's actually not a knot! Rather a braided joint, so there is less stress on the separate members. Another thing. I know heavy braid "seems" thin, but do not think that you have to match up line diameters. Your selection of a 6 - 8 lb. test leader worries me. I'd opt instead for at least a 10# test leader....preferring to go to 14# test. JMO. Quote
deadadrift89 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 J knot has been working well for me. I started out with the Uni-Uni then Seaguar onto Albright but the J was strongest for me. Alberto has a big following but I never could tie it fast on boat and get it right never tested it for strength so cant compare. Quote
jordanc Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 For small diameter braid like 10 to 15 lb test to 6 or 8 lb flouro I always go with a modified Albright knot. I double up the braid and usually make between 10 and 20 wraps. You will not break that knot and if you go long enough of a leader it will still pass through the guides due to it still being very small. If you do a YouTube search you can see Aaron Martens showing how to do it. I used to use a uni to uni before and the modified Albright is stronger and thinner. Give the other knots mentioned here a shot as well and use the one you like best. Quote

I agree about leader strength, only time I would use 6# leader would be pond fishing void of vegetation. Much of my fishing is 15# braid with a 20# leader whether I'm fishing canals for bass or inshore salt species. I have no concerns regarding the strength of any knots I use. Quote
