cddan Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Any thoughts on Quantum reels.A friend took apart his tour edition and put it together wrong. I found the first drag plate backwards. Works good now. They seem like the most solid built reels. Anyone have thoughts or reviews on their Quantums. My friend also has KVD's and the smoke they seem like great reels but can be a little finicky.I have had all three of them apart and they are really well made. Also it didn't seem to have their hot sauce on the bearings is that from factory? I always thought hot sauce was the &*^%.Anyone a Quantum monkey? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 28, 2013 Super User Posted December 28, 2013 There isn't a lot of love for them, I have 2 smokes along with a Kinetic and a Catalyst and I have no problems as they work well and are work horse reels. That said, I'm not a loyalist, I have an Abu Garcia Revo Premier 2nd gen. a Daiwa Advantage, a TD-X and a TD-S, a couple of Okumas and a Pflueger. Out of all my reels my favorites are my Smoke 150 HPT and my Lews Tournament Pro TP1H but every reel has a use. If you are looking to find some love for Quantum reels you won't find it here, most are Shimano, Daiwa, and Abu Garcia, all are good companies and produce good reels which is why I won't be loyal to any brand and I try reels that others don't like for my own results. cddan Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 Yes I noticed there aren't any Quantum posts. Looking at there high end reels, they are very well made. You would think they were more popular and I was just wondering why ? I use abu and bps and daiwa right now.Like you said they all can have issues. I noticed the quantums don't go much for distance. They seem to be very durable but I'm not sure. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 28, 2013 Super User Posted December 28, 2013 I fish 6 of these ~  And 2 of these ~  I love them.  A-Jay   1 Quote

What do you like about them anything you don't like?  I fish 3 versions of the reel ~  TKVDC150PPT 5.3:1 CRANKING Reel  TKVD150HPT 7.3:1 Used for top water, jigs and burning spinner baits  TKVD150SPT 6.6:1 used for everything  Line used is 15 - 20 pound lb. and 10 - 65 lb. braid.  A-Jay Quote
gonediven Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Its only my first post; but i have have 2 Smokes (7:1) and 1 Energy (6.3:1). I'm not the complete loyalist type as I also have a Lew's TP (and Daiwa and Shimano spinning) . I really like all the reels and they all get lots of use. One of my Smokes has a little play in the handle, but nothing that even gives me hesitation in using it. I'm also looking at picking up two more Smokes or Lew TP's as I ordered a couple of new rods last week or so. Quote
Grantman83 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I had 2 smokes which were good reels. Only problem with them was that it was IMPOSSIBLE to get the d**n side plate off. And if I did manage to, It was almost as bad getting it back on. The braking system could be abit finicky in that it would be easy to cast one second, then the next cast would be a backlash.  The Tour PT I had was not a good reel. I got it on sale for 100 when it was 250 but I ended up selling it. It was rough retrieve and didn't cast well at all. Like most companies, there are going to be some eggs but Quantum has a rep as not being up to snuff. What bothers me is their high turnover in terms of reel models. They seem to introduce and then re-introduce new models of their reels which can be abit bewildering. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 I became a Quantum reel user this past season for the first time. Picked up a couple older gold Carbonlites. Only used one last season. It is spooled with 6# XL and mounted on a Falcon Expert Light. I used it to throw 3/16 oz. Shad Raps. Tried a 1/8 oz. inline spinner, but my casting ability needs improvement to get down that low. So far it is casting a Shad Rap as far as my much more expensive TD-Z 105H.  Picked up a ML Crankin Stick recently, and mounted the other Carbonlite on it. Reel is spooled with 6# Elite. This combo throws the 3/16 oz. Shad Rap just as far as the other combo. Reels were refurbished at the factory. Wish I could say they have hauled in a ton of fish, but anyone living in my area would instantly know I was lying.  Quote
Insanity Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 When they first came on the market here. A buddy bought one from walmart (cheap around $35) took it out that day and it messed up. He returned it and the next one was even worse. I don't recall the problem but they where pure crap. My 35 dollar diawas from back then still work. For that reason alone I will never own one. I don't care how good bill dance or anyone else says they are. Unless they hand me one for free you want see one in my hand. Lol. I'm not brand loyal. Il buy what ever fits my needs and is built best in my price range. Which is usually pretty cheap. I am currently impressed by a pfleuger I have right now. But it's a few years old and I'm sure like other company's they are making them cheaper every year. Same model reel made this year is proubley crap compared to it. Every year every company seems bent on making the cheapest crap they can to be competitive in the cheap reels category. Heck even Lews jumped ship. They put out the Lews lazer a few years back. best casting smoothest cheap reel made at the time. But the infinite bearing doesn't work for long. And after taking one apart I can say its crap. Really bad! There went there name in my book. Brand names mean nothing anymore. It's truly sad. I no you get what you pay for. But which company do you want to gamble the big dollars on with all of them turning out weekend angler crap. That might not even make it threw the weekend. Whoa sorry that turned into a rant I think. Lol. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013  Those silly folks over at Quantum - every reel they sell is defective.  That's not right.   Why can't those guys make a good reel ?  How the heck do they even stay in business selling all those bad reels ?  I just can't believe it -   A-Jay 3 Quote

I meant if there cheap stuff doesn't work off the self when they first come into the market place. Why would I want to try a higher end one. And You used the proper word there. defective! Both reels. I grew up using the Bantums and what did diawa call there's. Mag force was there drag. Humm what ever. Anyway. That's the base line I base every reel by. A little to high a standard in today's market. I guess. Lol. Quote

Insanity Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Lol I edited more. While you where posting. But il bet the spark will at least make it to the gas station and home one time. Il bet there quality control is at least that good. Lol. No I follow you. I'm just saying I want own a quantum. I don't recall for sure but I think they started making cheap reels and then moved into higher end. I don't no for sure because we didn't have a bass pro shop back then just walmart. But I follow you. I'm just hoping there quality control issues with there cheaper reels have gotten better. If not there ruining a lot of weekend for poor folks that can't afford high end stuff. Super User MCS Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 Well only been using a casting reel for about 4 or 5 months. Just got a energy pt vi sweet reel no complaints here, easy to cast and works well out of the box. Have my eyes set on a smoke inshore or a tour mg. I also know plenty of folks that have them and they seem to be a durable reel at a decent price. Quote
pbizzle Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I've seen a lot more love for quantum than okuma. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 I own 2 cabos both really nice reels. Â My newer 40 is only 8 months old, can't give a review on durability for short term use, except to say it's rock solid and has handled some good sized fish. Kind of a toss up as which reel I like best for offshore spinning, my soron 60 or cabo 40, both are hands above my Penn or Shimanos for that kind of fishing. Â I tend to use my stradics for jettie fishing and my smaller sorons and supremes for beach and some freshwater. Not that I've used it, but Quantum offers 48 hour warranty turn around time on freshwater reels and 24 hour for salt reels. Quote
Insanity Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Ok had to do some looking but yep they still do it! Let me try wording it like this. I'm not debating how good there better equipment is like PT series. But the question was about there Brand. Well here is what Quatum is branding them selves with to the average weekend angler.Thats just getting started. I did a search on walmart site and found they have a quantum ultrex with 2 bearings. Darn I forgot the price $29 or there abouts. They should have stopped at the Vantex five bearing model for $40 something. In today's reels if it doesn't have five bearings it most likely will end up broke before the day is up. If it even works in the first place. Catastrophic failure in the first couple of cast. Will get you the word of mouth I try to pass along for them. That's why I don't want to give them my business. Or any company that puts out less then five bearings in these cheap plastic bodied reels. But it's not just them. Seems there are a few company's out there trying to get Shakespeare's customers. It's all about the money. And there even using there brand name to do it. It's pitiful. Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 I've owned a couple Quantum reels and while I prefer my Shimanos the most I still like the Q's. I use a Smoke hlpt100 for pitching/punch and a lower end KVD reel for lipless and squarebills. Both are really smooth and so far have been great reels. I have no further plans to expand beyond these two but I always check out their new products just to see what they have going on. I have yet to experience a bad product with them. I still have an old Shaw Grigsby SGA100 baitcaster as a back up. It was my first bc ever and has caught 100's of fish. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 Don't know why there is so much hate for these reels. Find it kind of strange since they are used by one of "the best", if not "THE BEST", bass fisherman in the country. Yeah, I know, his are special, made just for him.....yada, yada, yada...... Hootie The problem with him using them. Is what he doesn't tell ya. He doesn't use the same reel for long. Most likely not even a season. If so it would be sloppy feeling as heck. Might even be grinding after the fish he is catching. They all are smooth for a little while but feel like there going to fall apart soon. Not from my experience with Quantum as I have none. But I'd guess them to be like others. Quote
