Bought a new hummingbird 899 today from Bass Pro. and just a little heads up ,if you plan to use the Ethernet Networking cables you will have to buy the  AS EC QDM adapter cable . it is the same cable used on the 700 series. The unit is so new that the sales rep had no clue . they didn't even have one on display yet we had to call humminbird to find out. I am happy with the unit, it has all the capabilities that their top of the line units have like 360 sonar ,Radar and weather station. the good news is the cable is only 30 bucks and you can go unit to unit with no networking box between them.

The complaints I have read about that model is it is not Navionics Platinum compatable and comes with the Compact SI transducer rather than the HDSI transducer than the previous version 898 had.

Some don't like the internal GPS antenna. Crybabies no matter what new stuff has.

It is capable of doing dual frequency imaging though by adding the HDSI transducer and changing the Transducer Select menu setting to Hi-Def Sidescan.

You can also use 800 kHz with the Compact SI transducer by changing the Transducer Select setting, but you won't get the sharper images that the longer HDSI transducer produces.

Basically it is stated to be a wide screen version of the 798ci HD SI Combo.

You won't find much sonar intelligence at Bass Pro especially about Humminbird equipment.

I didn't realize that until you said something but it is the compact transducer, I will be getting the HDSI transducer .I actually plan to purchase another unit for the bow and will send them back to HB for an exchange. I read for 90 bucks you can send them back and exchange them but will have to wait until Monday to call them and find out.

Hi   Gents,

New  to   bass resource  beauty  site,  I have purcahsed  the  899  also, along with the  360 TM,  and the  ethernet  adaptor you are 100 percent bang on,

no biggie,  I will be  doing  an install video of all the items if  I can, the  360 TM will only  install on the  minnkotta    terrova  ? fortrex   but  newest is the   EDGE

which I had  to purchase also  ,,  If  I had  read the info before buying I would have known this  hahahah , cant wait  to get it installed.

it also needs to be set up on a  switch, so i have made my own  rather nice   one  I think .

In Ontario Canada here  so  seems my Navionics  Golds  work no problem on the   899.

If the upper shaft diameter of the Edge is the same as the Fortrex, then it wll fit without a spacer.

Humminbird does not make a spacer that I know of.

Transducer Shield and Saver has a spacer that adapts the bow 360 to a Motor Guide trolling motor. That is what I have.

The mount bracket clamps to the upper shaft.

Thanks  Wayne,

Yes it  fits on the  Edge Model,  I  see you  have  it,  did you wire it  to a On/Off  toggle  (as  I am)  I have it mocked up right now in my  work  shop  , ready to install,

I  will be  replacing the  Motorguide  with the  Edge 55,    Do have  a question   ???  Did you install the  compact transducer on the  Motorguide??

I will be  running  2  12 volts in parallel for all the equipment  up front, all the  items are ready to install, just need to wait for all the  snow up here to disappear  so I can pick up my boat and get underway .

 Many thanks  for the  info

Yes, I put a On/Off swtich on the 360 power cord.

No, I did not and would not put a Compact SI transom transducer on the trolling motor.

I have a 1198c SI and use a HDSI transducer on the trolling motor,.

I had the same transducer there when I used my 798ci SI unit at the bow. Before that I used the Compact SI puck like the large one in this picture.

2Puck1-1.jpg

The transom Compact Si transducer does not have extra internal shielding like the Compact SI puck or the HDSI transducer to help with possible RFI from the trolling motor. I used the correct parts for the application.

Excellent  information  and  pics,I will try the   Compact  on the   Trolling Motor for now,I have it all set  to  go   will post  the   pics  as  I  go along, if  I notice a problem with the  compact  then  I will switch to the  HDSI transducer. The Gps receiver i see is not flush mounted,on   your  deck  as  I was  planning on  doing, I noticed  somwehe  that there was  arequirement  for  a clear  view of  horizon but not sure of the  actual importance of this as  Im thinking more along the lines of clear view  of the   sky(  I do like the raised look  you  have)

I have made  my  own  switch   for the  360,   would like to see your  switch setup  , this is all the  new  stuff to replace the  Motorguide  , the  Lowrance  the  360 Tm is hiding in there  also, in the bags  is  all my prewired  cables  ,switch   etc.

Thanks

My switch is a common toggle switch, nothing noteworthy or worth taking a picture of.

I prefer to use the antenna mount for some applications. My GPS antenna at the transom is flat on the deck.

The antenna is not a satellite dish, it is just a multi-channel antenna and doesn't have to be "aimed" at the sky.

Some place the antenna under the deck of fiberglass boats and is not visible. It just can't have radio frequency blocking material between it and the satellites.
