Difference Between Dobyns Savy And Champion Series?

Recently i have been looking at Dobyns rods and im struggling to find the main differences between the champion and savy series. Last year i recieved a dobyns champion 735 as a birthday gift and absolutley love it and it makes me want to get another dobyns sometime this year. Ive done some research but i have hard the hardest time finding information of the differences and similarites between the two. Can anyone give me some info?

Blank, guides, and quality of cork are the big differences. Having said that the champions offer better feel and also more models to choose from. Depending upon your intended use for the new rod you may be able to get by with either series rod. I have a savy 735 for frogging and a 734 for spinnerbaits and smaller swimbaits. For these techniques I just don't see it necessary for me to bump up to a better rod than the savy as they are niche techniques that don't see as much use as other rods.

any sort of bottom contact or feel-champion extreme but the champion is no slouch in feel and you would be more than pleased with using a champion for bottom contacts...until you use a champion extreme.

 

the blanks obviously improve as you go up in the lines. the difference in savvy to champion is larger than champion to DX. the "Fast" actions also tend to get a little faster in each series. i.e the DX744 is a little faster than the champ 734 but not anything to get really hung up about.

Gary himself states that the champion series is the backbone of the dobyns line. The extremes were made for people who want alittle more bling and a touch of sensitivity. The champ series is more than adequate with feel techniques as erll

If I were you I would focus on finding the best rod out of the lineup you can afford for the technique you are looking to use it for. Many rods within the Dobyns Rods lineup (Savvy, Champ, Champ Ex. and Coalition) can be used for multiple techniques but each will have a different feel in weight, sensitivity and action. As stated before about the difference between the Champs and DX's I also have the Champion 734C and the Champion Extreme 744C and I prefer the Champ for certain techniques over the DX and vise versa. What technique are you looking to get another Dobyns rod for?

If I were you I would focus on finding the best rod out of the lineup you can afford for the technique you are looking to use it for. I was looking for a rod for texas rigs around 3/8-1/2 ounce in size and possibly carolina rigs. I wanted this rod to be 7' so i was considering a 704 in either the champion or savy series.

I would definitely say you want the Champion series. I would step up to a 5 power personally for 3/8-1/2oz weights. I got a Champ 735c for a heavier jig/worm rod with weights primarily 1/2oz. I got a DX 744 for 1/4 up to 1/2oz, but prefer not to go over 3/8 on that rod.

I would highly recommend you go with a Champion series over a Savvy for any technique where sensitivity is of concern. Champion series for any bottom contact technique and the Savvy for moving baits. I personally use a Champion Extreme dx704c for all t-rigs 3/8 to 1/2 ounce and it is amazing! I've also used it for Carolina rigs and I felt it handled 1/2 ounce perfect. I wouldn't recommend going to a 5 power for the weights you mentioned unless you plan on going above 1/2 ounce. I feel that the 5 power rods (champ 705c or DX 745) really excel from 1/2 ounce up as the tip loads up better with the heavier weights where the 4 power rods (champ 704,734 or dx744) excel from 3/8 to 1/2 ounce.

A Dobyns 4 power would fit your bill perfectly. The Jump between the Savvy to Champion is a huge one. The jump between the Champion to the Extreme not near as much. This was from Gary's mouth direct. I won't go below the Champion line. Especially for bottom baits. A 704 Champion would give you that tingle. Ron over at Valley Sports will beat the sale price of most all the other retailers everyday.
