What Was Your Best Day Fishing?

My best single day did involve two pb's at the time.  Here are my best five fish caught in one day at lake baccarac this last March. It's hard to forget a day when you seemingly can not do any wrong.

One of my best days bass fishing was about 2 years ago, I went fishing in the glades and I caught 40+ bass ranging from 3-5lbs all on Hollow body frogs. I had to retire a frog that day. That thing was so beat up, but it did its job.

Alligator Alley in the everglades can be a magical place at certain times of the year.  When the water starts to drop in the massive glades bass must find deeper water or die.  They go to gator holes, river channels, and the massive canal system cut through the swamp to control flooding.  When all the big bass move into this system fishing can get off the chart.  There are boat ramps all throughout the system, and excellent opportunities for fisherman.  200 to 300 catch rates are not uncommon for all day trips.  Many fish will be in the 4 to 6 pound range.  Seldom do you catch really huge bass in the glades because some bass never make it back to the deeper water and become gator food.  For sear numbers the eyerglades stand by themselves as one of the best spots in the world for catching.  Great to live in south Florida!

One morning, 83 fish, most over 4lbs, including 2 over 10.  Got to the point where you would raise your rod over your head and try to make the fish jump.  If it wasn't over 7lbs, you gave it slack to try and get free.  Never again have I had anything close to this, but man do I hope it happens again.

 

the stats- 2 over 10, 1 over 9, 1 over 8, 4 over 7, 10 over 6 and 10 over 5.  2 biggest were 10lbs 9 oz and 10lbs 2 oz.

I’ve been very fortunate here the past few seasons to have some very memorable days on the water.

At least half of it has to do with being able to get out on the water a bit more and the other is directly attributed to where I’ve been fishing  and who I was with.

 

 But back before I’d started floating the sweet water again, every spare moment I had (and some I didn’t) was spent chasing striped bass off the east coast.   A Coast Guard career helped put me in some killer spots from Maine down to the outer banks of North Carolina and most everything in between.  The last several years were on the southern tip of the New Jersey shore.  May not be common knowledge but the “Locals” know – very good fishing.    This is where my efforts went nocturnal and it all clicked.   The fishing became more like hunting.  By combining the right tide, moon phase, season and with a little luck, the right weather, there were some epic nights on the beach & rocks.  It was a little hairy at times but I was addicted.    

 

 I didn’t often stay much after grey light for a couple of reasons.  One, the big fish bite was usually over by then & two, I didn’t want others seeing the spot or the method.  So I’d split just as most were getting to the beach.  The fish pictured was the first of many plus size stripers and most memorable as it came after sunrise.   After a very satisfying night, I decided to hang just a little longer; just a few more wicked long casts and Boom; there she was.    The fish offered a fantastic battle and rather than “using the force” to land it in the dark, I actually got to see the event.  Nice.

 Since the retirement and subsequent relocation to northern Michigan, there’s no salt water on these lips any more.  I do miss it.  However, 11 pound green bass & 6 pound brown bass work wonders to help ease the burden.

Favorite and most memorable freshwater day, a friend and I decided to hit the water for ONE hour after work... That ONE hour produced a 4 fish bag of 18lbs 3oz(I think), we had my PB 6lbs 5oz, my 4lbs 14oz, my friend's 4lbs 12oz, and my stout 2lbs 9oz....

 

Favorite salwater day, Cape Cod Canal, fall day and they were running strong through the canal! We caught 27 in a couple of hours lots of nice sized stripers!

Second day ever fishing a jig (3/8 SK black and blue Hack Attack jig w/ 4.20 RI Sweet Beaver), maybe within my first 10 outings using a baitcaster, I landed my PB which was over 8 and another solid large mouth over 6 from the bank. Caught a couple more in the 3-4lb range. I'm not sure if I can get the pictures since I switched phones, which is a bummer, but I've been hooked on a jig ever since.

Ok ... I have 2 days which stand out to me this year.

 

#1 - Fishing in my first New York State Federation tournament I ended up cashing in (13th place out of 90+ non-boaters).  It was a grind on Chatauqua that day and I fished hard just to get my limit.  Caught my last and biggest with less than 20 minutes of fishing left.  "Never Give Up" comes to mind when I think of this day.  I was so proud of myself for the fight.

 

#2 - A personal best 6+lb LMB fun fishing with a friend from a canoe.  We had a blast catching fish all afternoon.  I tossed my drop shot into a pocket and BAM!  The look on his face when he lipped it into the boat was priceless.  He ended the trip by tossing me in the muck trying to ground the canoe.  A mistake ... I think not!  LOL

When I was four years old i entered a mens fishing tournament with my dad. It was on Clarks Hill with a group from my church.  I ended up putting together a 14lb 5 fish limit and got second place out of all grownups. My dad didnt even place.  Not to mention all the fish were caught on a Snoopy zebco rod that was only about 3 ft long. Fell in love with fishing that day and still have the trophy.

 

I'd have to say that's a real good fishing day!

Have more then one of those.

(1) over 200 Smallmouth between 2 of us on Pickwick around 1988. Best fish was just a little over 7 lbs and more then I could keep up with that was 4lb to 5 lbs.

(2) By my self the same week, over 100 bass mixed bag same bait on the same waters. Best Largemouth 8lb 4 oz best smallmouth 6lb 8 oz.

(3) Fishing with my wife and 140 lbs of blue cats in only 2 fish. She had the best one 

(4) over 50+ Stripers on 1 lb shad for baits in 4 hours. I could not lift my arms after that morning on the water.

Back in 2006 we had a very memorable day on Lake of the Woods. My dad, best friend and I caught probably 150-200 smallmouth in one day, with countless pike, several walleye, a few muskies, several jumbo perch, a few crappie, and a chunky largemouth mixed in. Caught most of them on a tiny risto rapala, small shad raps, spinnerbaits, and a couple on a jerkbait. There weren't many times throughout the day that there was not a fish in the boat. The only thing wrong with the day was that I lost my little risto rap (my last one) to a pike that cut my line right as my dad was putting the net underneath him. We had a day this spring where we probably went over 100 smallmouth on the day, but it doesn't really compare to that day at LOTW.

Pete 1988 time frame most have been pretty special on Pickwick.

It was something back then for smallmouth bass. Sad part is I have not fished most spots for years. And now 95% of the spots I used to catch all the brown fish from. Now has grass over it but still thinking the fish will be on those spots. Just have to fish them different.

Bought a 1988 Bass Hawk boat that feb, and man did I have fun out of it. But sad part, caught just as many fish or more out of the 14ft john boat I used for years.

I've had lots of very good days fishing but a couple of them really stand out.

First was a day several years ago that I caught a 5 fish limit in Kansas that weighed 30lbs 2ozs. My smallest fish was a 5lb 1oz fish, biggest was a 7lb 2oz bass. All of them were on a day in February that never got above 40 degrees and all of them were on a swimbait. Along with those bass were probably 50 or more wipers up to 8lbs 2ozs. I can't really remember being tired from catching so many fish like that. Unfortunately it happened before I carried a camera all the time so I have no pictures of the fish, just a picture of a very well worn Strike King King Shad, all the marks are from that one day as it was brand new when I got to the lake that morning.

Second was a day fishing with my dad that we caught well over 100 fish. A combination of all 3 bass, wipers, white bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. We were walleye fishing with jerkbaits and it was some of the nicest weather I can remember fishing in and it just seemed like everything wanted to eat our baits. It was just that much more special that I got to share it with my dad. We also managed to catch our 10 keeper walleye over 18", something I'll probably never manage to do again in Kansas since our walleye populations aren't that great.
