Froggin/punchin Versatile Rod

Hey guys I know usually you need two different rods for punching heavy mats and for froggin but I'm working on a budget. Does anyone here use the same rod for both techniques and if so what brand, model, specs, etc. Currently I don't have a dedicated rod for these techniques. Thanks in advance!!

I have two rods that I could use for either function. I have a 7' H IROD AIR and a 7'3" Heavy *** ***. The Air is not a stiff as the ***, but it is very comfortable, stout, and light. The *** is a broom. It is a nice heavy duty rod that can be used for flipping too. The *** is what I plan to punch with this year while leaving the shorter Irod for Froggin or something else.

Boom...that or the new dx 746 I plan on upgrading to though it is expensive. 

 

In all honesty, the braid is going to make many rods much more sensitive than normal.  If you plan on using the frog in the thickest stuff, then the longer rod shouldn't be an issue because you won't be working/walking the frog.

I personally use two different rods, but a good rod for both techniques is a 7'6" MH/F, 7'9" H/XF abu Veritas, nice and light, but definitely heavy enough to handle either technique nicely... especially for around $100.00...

I just got a *** *** 7'3" H xfast action.  Probably out of your price range, but I'm going to use it for punching and frogging as it has length, power and a good action to fling the frog and walk it.

 

*** comes in a 7'3" H for 130 bucks with a fast action.  I'd also suggest looking at Daiwa and Lews rods as they have a large assortments at various price ranges.

 

My 7' Team Daiwa T rod in MH also works satisfactory with punching and good with frogging and is under 80 bucks.

Yeah exactly guys, I get that this usually requires two different rods for the techniques listed but as previously stated I'm trying to save myself some money at least for right now. All of the opinions on rods listed are great. Thanks a lot!

The 736 Champion Dobyns rod is your one and done rod. Look at the specs for this rod. Primary use flipping and pitching, secondary function, frogging. Now they have come out with the split grip in the same series. Yes, its a higher end rod as far as price but since you are looking for 2 rods for 2 applications this one rod  fits the bill.

I'll second the 736 for sure..

PLENTY of backbone and a soft enough tip for punching and frogging..

It's also a really well balanced rod for its heavy action..

I fully agree here. Im guessing the $100 range for a rod is what your looking at? Look at it like this, a Veritas is a $99 right, so two of those would be $200 for a pitch n flip and frog rod setups, plus reels, I know your only looking for one setup so this is for comparison sake. The 736 is $30 more and will out fish the Veritas or anything else in the Veritas range at BOTH techniques HANDS DOWN.

That being said, I own a 7'3 MH/F Veritas an dislike it for anything, I do not like the feel of it in my hand, its a lifeless broomstick to me. I would look at a denali, 13 fish, even St Croix, or for a Little more a Savvy is really what id be looking at.

No i completely agree with you and to be honest this rod is not out of my price range, the point I was trying to get across is I'm not trying to spend double that type of cost so let's say two rods, two reels, etc and end up paying 500-600 dollars. The dobyns seems like a great rod and it's definitely one that I am doing additional research on as well.
