What's Your Favorite Football Head Jig?

I'm already thinking about next spring.  It's a goal of mine to gain confidence throwing a jig.  I prefer the football head jig for less hang-ups.  But I'm not opposed to listening to those who like the "arkey" head.  Which head style is better for less hang-ups in the rocks? 

 

I don't like the straight in-line eye tie as they can get pinned in between rocks.  I don't like a super thick and long weed guard.  I don't like a rigid skirt with weak elastic keeping it together.  I love when they already have an elastic for rattles (if needed).  So, what's the best brand and style out there?  Which brand jig has it all in your opinion? 

 

I'm really going to devote the time and patience this season into throwing the jig.  And because it requires a lot of time and patience, I want to make sure I'm using the right jig.  Thanks.

The football jig that I have been using lately is the bass patrol football jig. I like the one with round rubber and silicone. At $2.00 a jig, you can't go wrong.

The only jig I know of that meets all your requirements is Gary Kliens Rattleback Weapon jig, hard to find and I believe Iovino still sells them. Another excellent all around rock and cover jig is the *** football jig.

Gary Yamamoto makes an excellent plain football head with wire weed gaurd and either Owner or Gamakatsu hook option, perfect for GY Hula grubs that I recommend for both entry level or seasoned jig anglers fishing deep rocky structured lakes.

I've thrown a lot of jigs over the years and never found one that I really liked until I stumbled on the Dredge Head by Siebert Outdoors. Sharpest hook I've ever seen on a jig...you set the hook on that fish and it's lights out! A great jig!

Thanks, Tom.  When it comes to this technique, I've caught the most fish using a plain football head with a thin weed guard and hula grub.  Lots of love for the site sponsor!

This is the Football I've really become fond of The Dredge Football.  For what your looking to throw the jig into do not over look the Brush head either.  That is perfect Brush head fishing waters.

I Definitely like the looks of the dredge football.  Does it have a trailer keeper?   If not, what do you do to keep the trailer stable?  Can a rattle collar (like the naked baits collars) fit over the hand-tie skirt?

It does. I ordered a bunch of heads from Mike last week to start making my own jigs. The above head has the pointed bait keeper like most do. That hook is awesome. I am going to start using it for all my jigs I make, other than swims, from now on.

I'm a big fan of the Pig Sticker Quick 5 football jig. A guide at Table Rock put me onto them last year and I've caught a lot of fish on them in the past year and a half, including my PB smallie.

I saw the river2sea jig in that football jig review tackle tour did a while back. They look pretty nice under water with the rubber skirts. It got me thinking to go with rubber skirts in colder water. Anybody else do this?

I am not much of a football jig user, but when I do those are what I use too. I did make up some myself, using the Revenge football heads and Boss skirts, and those are pretty nice too.

It sure does.  RockChalk is correct. 

 

If you needed I can build the skirt or jig with a rattle collar and rattles on it.  This is one option that will be available on my new website i hope to have finished next week.

In the winter, this is my favorite football head jig.  1/4 and 1/8oz.

I'm trying to put together a basic starting football jig arsenal. Probably just two colors: black/blue, grn pumpkin. Rattles and no rattles. And two different weights, 1/2 and 3/4 oz. if I want to use lighter weight, I could use a 3/8 or 1/4 hula grub on a football head i never skip jigs, just senkos and shakeyheads, so I don't need the arky head. When I pitch to wood, its usually a sweet beaver or something weedless for less hang-ups. Am I missing anything?

Honestly, I highly reccomend hand tying your own jigs, I know someone who does and they are 2nd to none! But if you are like me and like most, you may not have time to do that, so I would strongly reccomend the River2sea touch down flat rubber jig... Strong hook, have yet to have one break off or bend on me, great weedguard, but if is a bit thick (at least to me), and my favorite color is probably brown and ourple or brown and orange... lost my last few on my tournament at lake mcclure saturday because we were fjshing big rocks and I was just getting wedged between the rocks the way I was fishing them, but most of the time you can get em our, unfortunately we were fishing them in the shalower parts and couldnt get up that far, owell... gotta make me a order soon!
