alexandboi Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Hey guys, awhile back I posted a topic about getting a kayak, but after some thinking and more searching I gained some interest in the sea eagle and have a few questions to those that own one... First off how well does it do paddling? I know this depends on how good I am at paddling too, but in general how is it. I'm trying to avoid a trolling motor for now... Secondly how do you guys run a fishfinder on it? Lastly how does it do in the wind? I've read a couple reviews and some people say that its horrible in the wind. If so, how do you prevent this? The reason for moving away from a kayak to an inflatable is, because I drive a coupe and my father sold his truck that I was going to use for transporting the yak, so I need something that can be easily transported in a small car. Loop_Dad Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Ron is right about the wind. I don't have one but I used to communicate with a guy who fished on it. You need an anchor especially you need to position your boat without a motor. Quote

Also would you recommend using two anchors, one in the front and one in the back? I figured I'd get spun in circles all day if it is a windy day.This is gonna be my first time setting anything boat related up so I'm pretty lost haha. Quote
carlm01 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 If you look at the back of the boat you'll see the transducer ,It's on a sully mount ,they sell them at cabelas or bass pro shops , I added a couple of the scotty mounting pads for my anchor and fishfinder and one more up forward for a gopro camera, If you order the boat from the factory you can get them to attach them for you .Mine was more of an afterthought . I attached the fishfinder with scottys universal fishfinder mount and that depends on what you have for a fishfinder they make several types of them so you should be all set ....I only use one anchor a 1 1/2 lb again a scotty set up.. you can find all of the scotty stuff on their site ..I would also recommend that you consider a trolling motor ....I do have a separate battery for my fishfinder just something I wanted ..... jignfule Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I have a gray 285fpb that I bought two years ago. I stick it in the trunk of my car when I'm traveling and when I see a place I want to fish I can be on the water in about ten minutes. I use a 55#TM and an anchor is a must, most days. I avoid large bodies of water and I had to develop a good pair of sea legs. One of the reasons I bought the 285fpb was the fact that I could stand up while I'm fishing. It is made out of pretty tough material and has held up well so far. I did notice a small gouge on one of the sides that scraped a few layers off, but I just patched it with material from the repair kit they sent with it and have had no problems since. Bottom line, I'm glad I bought it. Quote

alexandboi Posted December 26, 2013 Author Posted December 26, 2013 it doesn't matter small pond or large waters really...usually bassin your fishing shallow and close to the bank anyway...the only thing that really matters with a large body of water is with high winds and the monster chop it can make...i fish anywhere with my toon, it doesn't matter...use common sense with days that have high winds...get to know those bigger lakes where the launches are in relation to high potential bassin areas since covering water does have limitations...i'm a better fisherman because of the toon which has forced me to study my lakes i fish moreso and concentrate on learning to eliminate water so i can maximize my time... also with some ingenuity you should be able to devise a shallow water stake out for the sea eagle's...i made one for my toon, although the way i have mine customized it made that pretty easy to do...but its one of those little niceties that makes a big difference on the water...i'm much more efficient on the water because of it... alex, if you do get one and eventually get a TM for it, get a 55#...you can never have enough power in a trolling motor...you'll sure appreciate it covering water and bucking winds...i'd also advise to get the 42" shaft...that way you can set it up higher so when your standing and running it as it will be more comfortable/easier to reach...my buddy that has a sea eagle and took my advise on that 42", if he posted here more he'd confirm that statement.. but heres his thats the older pro model...but you can see how high the TM is and it also has the tilt handle...his exact TM is the 42" 55# Minn Kota Traxxis with the digital maximizer... i have the 36" shaft ONLY because i didn't know any better when i got my set up 4 years ago...but i tell you what, without question when i replace it, it will be with a 42"... Thanks for the tips. After researching a bit more I am pretty sure I will end up getting a trolling motor too. Quote

I have the Sea Eagle 285 Fishermans Package on Sale at $742.00 right now till the price increase. Ron I was planning to send you a pm about pricing sometime in mid January since you seem to have the best price... I just had to replace my car's transmission and want to buy my books for my next semester of college first. I guess I better get more hours at work soon haha. Quote
