Arv Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I am in the market for a new treble hook rod. I'm looking for something versatile enough to handle crankbaits (mainly squarebills), topwater treble hook lures and jerkbaits (something I'm starting to fish more). I was pretty set on getting a Dobyns 705CB Glass, but with the new rebate deal that St. Croix is running, the Avid crankbait rod could be had at a great deal. Do you guys think the MHM Avid could handle all the applications listed better than the Dobyns? Also, a second question. As mentioned in another thread, Gander Mountain runs a promo where you can get $5 off every $50 spent, and the St. Croix rebate of $50 off is for rods over 180. Do you guys know, based on the rules of the rebate, that it would still apply if GM knocks off $15 based on their promo? Thanks for any help in advance. Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I do all those with a Mojo 7'MHm. Works fine. 1/2-3/4 oz is the sweet spot, but will handle 5" Lunker Punkers or Pointer 128's with no problem. My friend just got that Avid model, I'll ask what he thinks. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I have the mojo and avid, for me using them for reaction baits I'd say the sensitivity doesn't come in much play. The avid, being a full grip has a better balance and of course you get the lifetime warranty. The croix 7'MHM is a sweet stick. 1 Quote
Arv Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 How does the MHM cast 1.5 squarebills? I've heard some people say its too much rod for them. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I have a Dobs 705cb glass on the way. Wont be using it until spring. I got it specifically for square bills. Ill be happy to report back after I can actually use it. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 17, 2013 Global Moderator Posted December 17, 2013 I don't have the Avid but I do have a Premier MHM and it will cast cranks down to a KVD 1.0 with no problem, but I mainly fish 1.5 and 2.0 sizes and it fishes those great. No experience with the Dobyns or trying to fish jerkbaits or topwaters with it, but it is a great squarebill rod. Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I have two of the avid MHM and it will do everything on your list. It should feel more crisp when working a jerkbait or topwater than the Dobyns 705CB Glass. Quote
Grantman83 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 You could go the graphite route in the 705 if want a more crisp feeling. It's what I use Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I won't use the Dobs glass for anything but squarebills only. For my jerkbait and topwater I'm using a 6'8 M/xf Mojo which has worked out great for me so far. I agree with Dwight on the Avid for multi use. If I looked into a graphite Dobs I'd probably go with the 704c. I'm getting glass to be more forgiving on my hooksets. I have another glass rod and I can keep fish buttoned up really well with it. Even with crappy stock hooks on a crank. Quote
JCiurej34 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I've heard nothing but good things about the St. Croix Mojo Glass Target Cranker (6'10" Mod Medium) which might also be a good option. I do not own that particular model, but I have the 7'4" Mojo Glass rod which happens to be one of my favorite rods. Quote
FourCorners Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 It really depends on how limber rod you want. I have both the Avid MHM and the Dobyns 705 glass. When I first got the rod, I was surprised how heavy the rod was; I really only use the Dobyns rod for crankbaits greater than 10 feet and spinnerbaits. With that said, I also prefer a much more limber rod for cranking and prefer the Avid MHM. If you're mostly using 1.5s, I'd probably go with the Avid. In terms of sensitivity, the Avid is more sensitive, which is something I like in reaction bait rods. Quote
BradGuenette Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Go with your gut, stick to the Dobyns. The 705cb glass is strickly a square bill rod for me, originally I tried fishing JB's on the rod but I found I was over working the bait which then lead me to the 704cb. The 704cb is THE jerkbait rod to have and I also enjoy using it for poppers. 1 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted December 18, 2013 Super User Posted December 18, 2013 AVC66MF is my favorite jerkbait rod. For medium weight crankbaits, especially squarebills, the AVC70MM is a great rod. Quote
