Brayberry Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I'm just curious of the weirdest place you've caught a bass. I have two: I was fishing on a small reservoir in Virginia during a tournament, we go into a cove and I look over and see a microwave sitting in about 2 feet of water, door open. I figured it'd be fun to cast to, and cast behind it with a crankbait. I cast out the crankbait past the microwave, and start retrieving it, and it starts running over the microwave, banging into the top of it, finally it comes past the open door and a bass swims out to smack it. Caught a 2 lber from the microwave On a trip to Buggs Island in Va, water was around 20 feet high in the spring, and m partner and I found a park that was flooded. We saw a couple of picnic tables with about a foot of water over the top, and we pitched into it. We both caught bass, and spent the rest of the day finding flooded parks to fish the picnic table pattern 2 Quote
bmlum415 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 For me it's probably fishing a sunken ship on the delta. That's all I can think of for now but I know I've found them in weirder places. Quote
Cryoglobin Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I caught a 4-5 pounder out of the bucket of a bulldozer that a failed mining operation let slide into a quarry pond. When I was a kid, maybe 12 years old, I spent about 3 weeks at my grandpas house in the houston area one summer. I had never seen so much rain in my life. It must have rained an inch a day for the first two weeks. Well, needless to say, all of the ditches and culverts were full. So, I asked my grandpa if he cared if I dug a "pond" on his land. Glad to have me busy and not bothering him I think, he said sure. So I spent 3 days digging a 10x10x4 foot deep hole, and then connected it to one of the culverts. As it turns out, the culverts were getting their water from overflowing long abandoned rice canals that contained fish. Long story short, the day before I was supposed to leave my grandpa's house, I caught a fingerling bass on a bobber and piece of bacon in my pond. My buddy called me an buttocks hole once for trying to cast into his open livewell from 20 feet away. That would have been a pretty good place to catch one I think. 1 Quote
Preytorien Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Ha. These stories are great. I have no microwave or bulldozer bucket stories, but I regularly catch 8-10in bass out of a small 50' by 200' retention pond in front of our local Home Depot. The shopping center has all kinds of stores and gas stations, you wouldn't hardly even think to look there, but it's fun to try ultra-light rigs out there. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 16, 2013 Super User Posted December 16, 2013 Before Alligator Alley was widened to 4 lanes, I caught a big bass out of the bed of a Ford Ranger Truck. The truck was dumped in the south canal at one of the bridges just west of the toll booth, in 10 feet of water. The truck was in the canal for years. After that day I fished that truck on every trip. 1 Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted December 16, 2013 Super User Posted December 16, 2013 I creek I like to fish has a path that runs from town to the lake that see's all kinds of traffic. For years people have tossed junk in the water. Some of my best producing pieces of cover in there have been said junk. The biggest fish I ever caught in that creek...a 6lb 2oz. LM, came off a white plastic lawn chair. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 16, 2013 Global Moderator Posted December 16, 2013 I've caught several bass out of a 50 gallon drum that's in the water on one of our local lakes. 1 Quote
0119 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Caught one in Charlotte Harbor which is saltwater while I was Snook fishing. It was 3lbs. and didn't look at all affected by the salt. Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 16, 2013 Super User Posted December 16, 2013 Out of a deer camp during the huge flood spring 2011 on Champlain, right next to its front steps. There's a Nissan Pathfinder that some guy had go through the ice last winter up here. He still hasn't taken it out, had a bunch of rats living on it. My secret pond near my old place had a snow machine in it that always held a good Larry. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 Weirdest place I caught a bass was in a 40 gallon fish tank in my garage when I was younger. (Technically that's cheating since I put it in there) I caught a small bass at a pond across te street from where I grew up. I put it in my fish tank that I had in the garage had few other pet store fish in there and I went out one day and they were gone lol. I couldn't fish the bass out with a net since I had those little green pet fish nets. Put a earth worm on a small hook and the bass ate it then I brought it back across the street to the pond Quote
Brayberry Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 I know there's also a small neighborhood lake near my parents house, I used to fish as a kid. There was a road that went right between the two lakes and someone had tossed 2 bicycles in the water. I went over and tossed a worm into it, and immediately caught a 2 lber. 1 Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I fish a lot in DC, so there's all kinds of interesting structure out here. A few things that stand out are shopping carts (although these are usually crappie magnets, but occasionally you can nab a bass off of them,) and tires. I have caught a good number of fish that were hiding in tires. There's one spot here on the Potomac where there's a ten-speed bike that's usually 3-6' deep depending on tides... I can almost always find a bass on it during the warmer months. I know there's also a small neighborhood lake near my parents house, I used to fish as a kid. There was a road that went right between the two lakes and someone had tossed 2 bicycles in the water. I went over and tossed a worm into it, and immediately caught a 2 lber. Was writing my post when you posted this. I don't know what it is, but the bike always holds a good fish. Seems like a negligible piece of cover, but it's always been good to me Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 In Florida it is common to catch bass just inside a culvert pipe or just outside the same pipe as almost all waters are interconnected by culvert pipes. Quote

loodkop Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The dam wall on one of my favourite dams was lifted by 5 meters (+/- 16 foot). This created lots of interesting structure with my favourite being a brick outhouse/toilet with a porcelain throne. 2 Quote
deadadrift89 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Small lake by the house had a old garbage can i would always throw at every trip but never a strike. Finally after about a year sure enough one was at home, felt like i won the lottery--HA! Another day i saw a couple guys fishing a ditch between Walmart and Best Buy thinking to myself what a waste of time, next thing you know one has a bass on. I started fishing there after that and it still puts out fish to this day.Made me think different about "urban fishing" 1 Quote
KyakR Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Years ago I casted into a low-hanging tree.......the lure (a TR powerworm) fell through the branches and dangled slightly in the water, having entered with nary a splash. I was relieved that I'd be able to get it back, but as I was paddling over, line slack, a nice fish sucked it up and pulled it under! The line remained tangled in the tree, and I fought the bass 'til his head was out of the water. Then I snipped the line and lipped my 3.25 lb tree-fish I had unwittingly reproduced the effects of an expert cast (silent entry, almost no weight for the bass to feel) long before I could do it myself.
