NavyVet Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I have never owned or fished with a Lews but hear a lot of positive comments about them on this forum. Are they a quality reel? How do they compare to ABU or Shimano comparing reels in the same price range model to model specifically the Speed Pro Seris? Quote
kingkong85 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Comparing specs, lew's has more to offer for the same or less money. Don't get me wrong, shimano is great as well. lew's has been in business for a long time. Back then lew's and shimano came out with a baitcast reek together. I've seen pictures of it. A couple of members on here have them. Back to topic, imo they are definitely a quality reel and with great customer service to back up their warranty. At the end it all comes down to personal preference. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 14, 2013 Super User Posted December 14, 2013 At 1 point I had 10 of them. Never a problem with any of them. They were all sold on here and from my knowledge are still in use today. I wish I still had them but I sold my boat and had no need for 10 combos for bank fishing. The tourney pro can be had for around $135 new and is the best bang for the buck. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted December 14, 2013 Super User Posted December 14, 2013 I really enjoy Lews. I have had a Tournament MG for about 2 years now and its been very good to me. So much so that I recently purchased a Tournament Pro, haven't had a chance to fish it yet, to give you an opinion. Quote
NavyVet Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 I am looking at Team Pro Speed. Retails for about $300. I currently have all Shimano and Revo but am willing to try others. 1 Quote
Arv Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 3/4 of my casting reels are lews. I'm not gonna make some comment like "lews puts all other reels to shame" because I've used other brands and they have all been quality products. However, once I discovered I could buy a lews tp, new, for under 150, sometimes closet to 120, I wasn't interested in buying much else. Unfortunately the tp is the highest I will be able to use for now since I am a left handed cranker, but it is certainly worth the money imo. 1 Quote

Grantman83 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Team Pro is an amazing reel. At 200 it's a steal. I was trying to sell mine but they undercut me lol. Quote

At the end it all comes down to personal preference. actually, back in the day, lew's came out with the first ergonomic casting reel (i won't say low profile because, by today's standards, it's not). lew childre actually contracted with shimano to manufacture the reels for him, which is how shimano gained a foothold in the reel market. but, the company pretty much died along with lew childre when he was killed in a plane crash. the lews name was revived by a family friend who bought the rights with a pledge to continue the lew's tradition of innovation and quality but it's not really the same company. i will say, however, that the "new" lew's is trying very hard and the new BB1 really does pay homage to the original with some excellent modernizing. Grantman83 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 All Aluminum Frame and both side plates. Titanium, scratch free finish. 5.9oz. Great great reel. Quote
Megastink Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 ........The tourney pro can be had for around $135 new...... New? Where? And do they come in lefties at that price? Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 14, 2013 Super User Posted December 14, 2013 Yes, new left handed or right handed. eBay just keep looking. Quote
bassum1 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I have some orignal Lew's BB1N's that still work fine from 1980.When they came back out I tried the Tournament Pro and fell in love with it and now own 24 of the new Lews reels. By the way the $300 Lews is not the Tp but the Team Tp.Tournament Pro and BB1 and all the Lews that I have are alu frames but they have graphite side plates.Tp is their best selling reel you get more for your money. The team Tp for 2014 is now 6.1ozs.Tp is only 6.7 and you can get these on ebay for around $150 and free shipping.I bought mine on ebay from Sportsmans Outfiters for this price.Great people to deal with. They retail for $199.Lews is great to work with. When you call them a person answeres the phone not a computer. In my area Lew's is out selling all the other brands of reels. Quote
trupp30 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I have a casting(Tournament Pro) and spinning(Gold Spool). I love them both. For the money you can't go wrong. Also, I have a Revo and a Chronarch, and I say the Lew's are better than both. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 16, 2013 Super User Posted December 16, 2013 How does Lew's compare to Abu? Internally, they are pretty much the same as a Revo. You pick the features and the price point that fits you. They are decent reels. Quote
