Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 12, 2013 Super User Posted December 12, 2013 As with any species knowledge is power, I've been consumed in trying to catch peacocks from shore in Delray, haven't been targeting LMB at all. Fishing all over Delray and Boynton I have a good idea of where peacocks should be, that doesn't mean they are. I have yet to see any west of the freshwater spillways, they used to be there, found some places I thought ideal. The place I found to be perfect didn't pan out in 2 days of fishing, but I know they are there, but I did finally catch some yesterday and a different spot, now I need to catch big one. Didn't really mind getting skunked, I like the challenge. Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Good the hear the population of peacocks are still that far north in palm beach. Boca use to hold some monster peacocks before the cold front wiped them out a few years ago. Quote
bostonsox2904 Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I didn't know they made it that far north. Haven't found any in Boca so I drive south on the weekends cause I have that peacock bass fever! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 12, 2013 Author Super User Posted December 12, 2013 Prior to the freeze peacocks were every where in West Delray, now I'm only seeing them near the Lake Ida chain in east Delray. Biggest I caught a few years ago was around 4 # and that was in the canal behind my home, lately they have been quite small. I used to catch quite a few of them in and near the St Andrews canal. CountBassula Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Hmmmm, this gives me an idea, although not sure if this would be legal... buy some in a pet store, raise them in an aquarium and then release to the canal behind my house... Quote
ccummins Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Got bunches in the lakes by my house in west Miami-Dade. Good luck up north! (Probably not that often that someone calls PB County "north"....) How are the populations of the invasives they were imported to control up there? (Mayan cichlids, tilapias, oscars, etc....) I think some of the most fun I've had fishing was using the Zebco 202's and earthworms with my grandson for Mayan cichlids. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 13, 2013 Author Super User Posted December 13, 2013 I caught mayan the other day while I was catching peacocks, thought the mayan was a better fighter for it's size. If I had a choice, which I don't, I'd be moving up Juno/Jupiter or close to Miami, better fishery both fresh and salt. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 25, 2013 Super User Posted December 25, 2013 They are coming back in good numbers in Osbourne and ida. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 26, 2013 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2013 They are coming back in good numbers in Osbourne and ida. Quite true and I've been totally fixated on catching them without having to drive south. Knowing your quarry is all important, I've caught literally hundreds of peacocks before the freeze. I've been doing my homework where these fish should be located and where they won't be, for now. I found a spot (got permission to fish there whenever I want), I just knew they were there and it took 5 trips but I finally scored yesterday, just a matter of time until I catch a large one. I knew I was right because I know the species and the area. Quote
