WhiteMike1018 Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Went out to the local pond today and tried out a pack of new Buzzfrogs i purchased at Dicks. Right to the left of where i was fishing there was a bunch of coontail that grew up to the surface already. So i get out my new pack of buzzfrogs and rig one up hoping to glide it over the mat. Which it somewhat did. But once it got past it sank down? > I thought the Zoom Horny Toads/Culprit Frogs/Buzzfrogs etc...were supposed to float on the surface like a scumfrog? I was using 8lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft with a Gammy 5/0 EWG hook. Quote
NEBassMan Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 you have to keep them on a steady "buzzing" retrieve or hopping retrieve to keep them on top. Sometimes the best thing to do is slide it over some pads or other vegetation and let it drop and sink into holes as you come across them. Jason Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 Yeh i understand now. For some reason i just expected they would float. Especailly how the material felt after i opened the package. They do seem nice though because you can speed the retrieve up or slow it down. Anyone else try or have success with theese? Quote
pipho Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 You said that you were using Yo-Zuri Ultra Soft which has fluorocarbon in it. That could be pulling the nose down. I have heard you have to keep them moving too so that could also be your problem. Quote
Cephkiller Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Uncle Josh Sizmic Toads come in a popping version that floats. If you want a stop and go presentation, these might be just right for you. I would also recommend using much heavier line. Not only will this kelp keep your bait on top, the fish often bury down in the thick weeds and a stout line is necessary to land even a relatively small fish. I use either 20 or 25 pound mono or 50 pound plus braid. Good luck. Quote

Yes but the bait fell at a fast rate, you could tell it sinks from the bait not the line even though thicker diameter mono would keep it up more. But what im trying to find out .....are theese things supposed to slowly sink or did i just get a bad bag? Quote
KenDammit28 Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 yes, they are supposed to sink. It has nothing to do with the line or anything else..thats just what they do. They are a solid bodied soft plastic and are no different than senko's or anything like that...they sink. I've fished frogs on Mono(big game 20lb test), Power Pro braid, and Yo-Zuri Hybrid(15lb test) and the frogs will sink on all lines. Less on the braided line than the others, but still sinks. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 I thought all YUM products stank. I think its somthing to do with that silly LPT stuff. ;D ;D ;D ;D Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 I thought all YUM products stank. I think its somthing to do with that silly LPT stuff. Think again, lol. Many Yum products are made 9in some of the same factories as many of our other favorite plastics. LPT is good stuff. Without it, the bait is plain old soft plastic. These baits are supposed to sink. They are multi-purpose. Great for a topwater as a steady retrieve. AWESOME to pull across pads and let it drop into the holes If want a frog to start and stop, float, etc., these aren't the ones Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 1, 2007 Super User Posted April 1, 2007 The Sizmic Toad comes in a floating model and is only available in white. That one will sink too if a very heavy hook is used. Quote
JigNBig Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Yum buzzfrogs are the worst plastic frogs ive ever used. try some zoom's. they dont roll over like yum and you will get a much better sound out of them. nice hook selection, i personally like 5/0 owner EWG's. Try 15lb instead of 8 or try some braid. i think you might be able to get away w/ a little lighter than 50lb. just experiment w/ different lines. also, the line has little to do w/ the fall. its just these baits are meant to sink. my go to bait is a grey ghost horny toad. just keep trying!! BassFishingMachine Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 The Yum Buzzfrogs work great for me. Yes they occasionally turn over, but I can't argue with results. And yes they do sink, I fish them with a steady retrieve, If I want to fish a frog that floats with a pause/go retrieve I'll fish a hollow frog. Although I heard stanley makes a floating plastic frog, but haven't tryed them. Quote
CK14 Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 i have also found that the YUM frogs like to turn around during the retrieve. and because they sink, i feel like i have to reel them in way to fast. i've found that most bass like a slow retrieve on buzzing type baits, not burning across the surface. Fishin49er Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Not hijacking a thread or anything, but I found some of those Riverside plastics at wal-mart that looks just like the Yum Buzzfrog. Which I think they are the same thing, because on the package it says infused with YUM attractant. 5 of them for 97 cents, can't beat that. Have yet to try them yet though. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 Thats Pretty Nice deal. I might have to checkout the super Wal-Mart Tommorow and see what the deal is. Thanks -WM Quote

The reason i was only using 8lb was because i was fishing afoot. Im not gonna bring my entrie rod arsenal bank fishing with me LOL. I usually just bring a MH spinning combo with me while bank fishing with 8lb, so this way i can throw smaller baits and also baits with a little larger profile. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted April 2, 2007 Super User Posted April 2, 2007 Try using a smaller, lighter hook. The bait will sink slower. Quote
FatBoy Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 I've used both the yum buzzfrog and zoom horny toads. They are definitely different b/c of the different shape of the "feet". In my limited experience, the zoom frogs are better for pulling across the surface. The legs get kicking a lot better and make more of a commotion on the surface. BUT, the yum frogs work better under the water. Let them sink to the bottom and then hop them through and along the edges of weeds. The legs kick good as they hop and look kind of realistic imo. If you think about that makes sense since the shape of the yum legs is kind of like the shape of the tail on a lot of swim baits like the storm swim shads. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 Thanks for clearing this up guys -WM Quote
