Pete-K Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Looks like Pickwick dam has the flood gates open. Sure wish I could go tomorrow, but have to take my wife to Jackson to the Eye doctor. But may just give it a try Friday. Pete Quote

Pete-K Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 What part of the lake are you fishing? Fishing the Tn end. and around the State line, Yellow creek. Hope to be fishing below the dam for browns next week. Pete Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I been wanting to get over there too.....something always seems to come up. anyword on shad kill yet? Arig bite fired up yet? the flow rate has been good and consitant......so they should be biting. I hope to find out soon. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 14, 2014 Super User Posted January 14, 2014 Apparently there has been so much waterflow the cold weather either did not result in a major shad kill or they were washed down stream. Friends of mine fished Saturday below the dam and slayed 'em! Best five were over 20lbs, including personal bests by both fishermen (5lbs & 5.5lbs). 1 Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 How did they even drift a live bait with the gates open? I didn't figure those fish would be out in that current with it flowing that fast and being that cold ? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 I'm sure they had to use some added weight, but the set-up was a simple split shot rig. 1 Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 well, I didnt go this past weekend. it was fact the fact I heard the shad kill was in full effect (i heard this thurs 1/16.) the guy said "dead shad are everywhere" so I didnt go over there. if anyone has been the last 7-10 days with first hand sight.......lets us know. thanks Quote

I didn't figure those fish would be out in that current with it flowing that fast and being that cold ? I dont know your experiance so take mine with a grain of salt. you dont drift "at the dam" per say..... you are actually down river a bit....even more so when it is really rolling. Granted I been when it was 75k..... but I gather from conversations and such the more current, the farther down you go. Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I fish down there all the time and pretty much live down there in October but typically I have trouble drifting at 70+ that's what I was curious about , it becomes a game of add more weight and/or let more line out until I hit the bottom which usually results in an immediate hang up lol, people think this is weird but I like it 50k or less personally Quote
Pete-K Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Its been around 90,000 CFS, Its tough but lots of people only fish when the waters high like this. Looks like without any rain toward the end of the week. The flood gates may be cut all the way down or off. Will be in Nashville Thursday and friday, going to the boat show after Lunch Friday. Then back home and I hope to get to fish a few days next week. Will have a open seat if anyone would like to go. Pete Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I have some friends coming down from Knoxville to fish with me Saturday, pressure is on for me to put them on smallmouth they have never caught any over 2 lbs lol so I'll be down there Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted January 22, 2014 Super User Posted January 22, 2014 Gates are closed, 4 or more generators releasing ~75,000 cfs. Tournament results last weekend: 12/17/13 Well, the fish seem to be turning around. It took 25.59 to win the winter trail this past weekend and 25.43 was 2nd. There also was a 10.23 big fish weighed. The weights fell off a little after that but it looks like they are getting ready to go. I will be glad when we get a boat so I can get a dose of it. Be checking back over the next few weeks for some sponsorship announcements for 2014. I am getting ready for a good year on the Tour. Quote

Gulls were all over the river at Savannah today. Did a drive-by at lunch and seen minnows floating and gulls eating like crazy. Pete Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Update on the winter trail tournament for all. This past weekend we had our last tournament and we ended up winning it with 24.16. Most fish weighed in seemed to have come from people that trailered below the dam. I know for a fact 3 20 ish lb bags came from down there. The water was 90,000 last weekend and is showing to be only 52,000 this weekend. Think that will completely shut off the bite or just cause the fish to relocate? Looks like the weather will be decent this weekend so who all is going down?? 1 Quote
Pete-K Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 I have found with the water around 90,000 CFP the fish are stacked in better spots. When its cut off like this, most times it scatters the fish unless they have been holding it for a week or so. I have found fish up at the dam after the gates were cut off. They like that slack current also. Was it hard to put a pattern together on the lake? Figure a spinner bait or AL rig would have been killer. That or crankbaits on the gravel in Al. Pete Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I haven't been on the lake in about two weeks but have heard it is super tough Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I know someone who is going to the lake tomorrow and I am going below the dam so hopefully between the two of us we can find something, now they are basically showin 3 generators all day which has got me nervous if they will even bite but all we can do is try! I've been below that dam before when I didn't expect to do good and killed em and vice versa! 1 Quote
Pete-K Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 From the looks of it, you did without current part of the day. Can 't understand why they allow these people that build right on the edge of the river bank to set there water levels. You would think TVA would keep some water to make current with on the weekends. But after the last flood and water front flood zone builders screamed and got there way. They think if TVA has to flood them even though they build in the wrong spot they can get a Lawyer and stop them. Guess they can as they did. Hope you had a good day on the water. I hope to fish Wed and friday above the day or below. May just go and catch a limit of sauger and have a fish fry. Quote
tjwhite1 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Today was OK but not great, fished all day caught 6 or 7 bass mostly 2-3 lbs with one going 5.6, we did run into a small group of big stripes and caught 3 10-15 lbs each that was fun but that was all for the day, water was very low hoping for slightly better results tomorrow with 4 or more running until noon Quote
Pete-K Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Talked to a guy in Savannah today. There bass club had a Tournament Sunday, not a fish was weighed in on the lake. The guy also fished all day Saturday and did not get a hit. And he may not be the best fisherman on the lake. But has fished it 35 years or so. Most times he does well. Went by 2 of the local watershed lakes Saturday, guess I could ICE fish them. Don't like seeing Ice on our Tn waters.. Pete Quote

Seems to be my experience at least. 3-4 weeks after the shad kill, and with not having one last year, it could be even longer. Shad were being dug up by barges in Yellow creek on the 15th, and gulls were everywhere. By mid Feb, I would think we could get a bite! Jeff 1 Quote
Pete-K Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 I figure we will have a kill again tonight. Even though it was warm. Minnows were in the shallow water today by the Bridge at Savannah. And they will forget to do back deep. So starting again and add time to bad fishing. But that is life in the slow lane. Pete Quote
