Mono With Less Memory?

Do some brands of Mono have more or less memory?  I ask because I had mine spooled at a local Cabela's, and what he put on there (which I don't remember, and is mistake number 1) coiled SO much, I ended up losing massive amounts as it spun off and got tangled up in  giant knots. I don't remember it being that bad before.  Now, winter is here and I have a bit of time to think about what I want to put on there next time....So I figured i'd ask.

I don't use mono that much but have used Suffix Seige and Trilene XL. #1 Spool yourself, or learn how to.  I don't want to downgrade anyone's abilities but the places that spool for you, tend to not do a great job at it.  #2 get some KVD LL and apply it to your line. That will help you a lot.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid is not a monofilament, but #4 & #6 behave pretty well.

X2  I like thin line for my spinning reels.  For casting reels, I have used Sufix Elite for some time now.  Never use a conditioner on it.  Big Game coils more if the line is allowed to set for awhile.  It will straighten out after a few casts, but Elite is good for me from the first cast.  I will be able to comment on Super Natural's memory from setting after the season starts next year. 

 

Izorline Platinum is a co-polymer that (in 15#) had a lot of memory for my daughter...even with conditioner.  She is now using 14# Siege, and is very happy with it.

Not at all. Spray it on the night before or a few hours before you go out and when you spool up initially. It'll make that line nice and silky smooth.

I'm a sufix fan here as well as yo-zuri which is not a mono but a co-poly. I'd second the advice that you learn to do it yourself. Years ago I used to go to a big box outlet and have it done and it would last a day until it was so tangled and unusable. It's very important that you spool the line on your reel in the same direction as the spool/bail turns as it comes off the spool.

Sufix user, both seige and elite. Elite is a little more supple but not as tough. Sufix really does a nice job putting the line on their wide spools. Worth every penny. I have used Berkely Trilene and big game as well as Stren original and megathin. The megathin is my third favorite but I will never use the others except for backing. Don't use line conditioner regularly. It really hasn't made much of an effect either way for me. Maybe where it is colder it may help more, that is usually when I have the few problems with the memory. I use 35 and 40 size spools with 8 and 10 pound line. My 20 size I got needs 4 or smaller. A lot of problems with line come from three things, too big a diameter line on the spool, too much line(over filling) on the spool or having the line lay improperly on the reel from not hand closing the bail or not reeling/putting line on with enough tension. I've used Trilene from 6-12lb loads.  I've always thought it was a good quality line for an affordable price.  I've also used Suffix Seige a fair amount.  Both are good lines.  Won't break the bank either.

Sunline Defier is unlike any other mono on the market. I cut off a 3 foot section, bent and stretched the crap out of it, and it still dangled straight and limp. Yes its expensive, but for the thinner diameter and headache free usage, it is worth its weight in gold in my book

As has been said before, spool the reel yourself. This eliminates one variable immediately. Besides, I wouldn't let anyone from Cabela's handle my reels   As far as line, I have used the Sufix Elite and I was highly impressed with it, especially as an upgrade for Berkley Trilene XL. Then I bought a spool of Sunline Super Natural. The difference is astounding, with Sunline having the smaller Diameter, the higher abrasion resistance, and much less memory. Since then I've purchased three more spools for the end of last season, and going forward all my reels spooled with mono will have Sunline Super Natural on them

I use Trilene XL for all of my mono applications. If it's a spinning reel then make sure the line is spooled onto the reel the same direction it comes off of the reel.

Sufix Elite is my favorite mono.  I don't use mono much but I am going to buy Sunline Super Natural next time I need some.  I've heard too many good things about it and I love their fluoros.
