I.rar Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Thinking about finally picking one up to use for heavier baits and maybe some saltwater fishing but would like to be a able to throw some smaller baits if needed. What's the lightest baits you guys are throwing with these small round reels? I have a 6'6 vendetta I could mount it on but I'm not sure how well it would do with something in the 1/4 oz range? If anything I'll go with a low profile BC but I've always wanted a round. Quote
georgeyew Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 I have a 6501 and it throws 3/8 just fine. So I am sure that the 4601 will handle 1/4. Quote
0119 Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 All I use are 4500/4600's. 3/8oz is about standard. 1/4oz is ok if you don't put to much english into your cast and the lure is not wind resistant. 1/4oz. balsa bait or spinnerbait can be a birdnest maker. That size spoon or jig, no problem. 1 Quote
tholmes Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 I throw 1/4 oz. cranks all the time with my 4600Cs and 8lb. mono. I set the brakes to 2 on and 4 off. It works like a champ Edit: If it's an older 4601C (not C3) I replace the white brake blocks with blue ones (ABU part# 20209) Tom Quote
John G Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Have you thought about a Calcutta100? My Calcutta100's throws light baits just fine. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 10, 2013 Super User Posted December 10, 2013 All I used to use were 4601 and 5501 C3's. Casting was never a problem with them, it's just they were not very comfortable after I got used to LP reels. I used to whip a Mann's baby 1- cranks which are about 1/4 oz, with a 6'6" M Berkely Lightning rod and 12lb Big game with no problem. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 10, 2013 Super User Posted December 10, 2013 I don't have any problem casting 1/4 baits with my 4600, but I don't go lighter than that. That is what my spinning reel is for. Quote
I.rar Posted December 11, 2013 Author Posted December 11, 2013 Thanks for the replies. 1/4 is the absolute lightest I would cast with this reel. I have a ml/f to handle anything lighter. I've been on the fence about picking one up since I started fishing but always opted for a low profile and have been pleased but something about these little round guys makes me want one. In fresh, it would probably be for heavier trigs, flukes and stick baits. I'm still not sure about what baits for salt or where to begin with since I've never really been into it but since I live so close to the ocean, I figure I mind as well get into it. Quote
MacP Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 I can't comment I've always used my larger round 'casters to throw heavy, heavy baits. Quote
