rbreedi1 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Plenty of great fishing in east TN. More lakes than you can keep up with. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 13, 2013 Super User Posted December 13, 2013 Louisiana. Both salt and fresh water fishing at its best. And you can contact Catt and fish Toledo Bend. Plus the food is great! Quote
VolFan Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Get a place on the upper end of Tellico lake in TN; you can fish for a multitude of species, and the scenery is great. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted December 15, 2013 Super User Posted December 15, 2013 Louisiana? I grew up there, but would never retire there. The humidity is brutal, and every living creature bites. Family and food keep drawing me back. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 If you have the choice.. land between the lakes area is pretty nice.. TONS of fishing water.. we have all the seasons.. you might see a snow or two but we never really ice over..  How do I find this area on a map? I'm also retired and would like to find a good fishing area with a low cost of living index. MacP Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I'm all about Cookeville, TN. 1 hour 15 minutes from Percy Priest, 1 hour to Old Hickory, 50 minutes to Dale Hollow, 30 minutes to Center Hill, 35 minutes to Cordell Hull, 45 minutes to Cumberland River, 30 Minutes to Caney Fork River. 50 minutes to Great falls lake and Collins River. Cookeville is extremely cheap to leave for the ammenities it has (ample shopping, places to eat, outdoor stores, hospital/clinics). Not prone to natural disasters either. I'm really happy with where I live.  That being said, if I were going to move it would be closer to Chattanooga. The fishing down there is better. As a city, I much prefer it to Nashville.  Land Between the Lakes has great fishing, but no scenery and nothing to do in that area. Small towns n' all. VolFan Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Traveler - Land Between the Lakes is between Kentucky And Barkley Lakes in western TN/KY. Nice area, but it's not very scenic. Go outside of Knoxville/Maryville TN. Cheap, beautiful country and you can fish for whatever freshwater you want. You could even fish while tailgating to watch the most wonderful college team in the country... Now you owe me a fishing trip... :-) 1 Quote

Don't come to South Florida, when I first became a snowbird in 1980 the cost of living was very reasonable, but that has changed.  Our first place was on a saltwater lake that led into the ICW, fishing was really good then with a variety of species.  If I were to move there are places in Florida I might pick other than where I'm at, I'm really attracted to Southern California too. VolFan Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I could've bought a house off of West Millers Cove rd in Walland about ten years ago. If I had, I'd probably still be there. Quote
0119 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Geez I thought The Land Between the Lakes was very scenic. Â Tons more so than concrete Florida. Â Paris seems like the small town I'd like to be part of and I found the bank fishing incredible the few weeks Ive been there exploring. Â I can only imagine the fishing would be better from a boat and roaming that river. Â Spent time east of Chattanooga/Cleveland area too. Â Scenic for sure but I never heard anything positive about the fishing in the Copperhill and Lake Blue Ridge waters. Â Just century old heavy metal pollution and tiny stocked trout. Quote
Pete-K Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 If you want the best fishing around. Don't move near Counce Tn. As we have year long fishing, great weather sometimes. But the fishing is hard to beat. Smallmouth bass the best your going to find near you. Lake showing off with big largemouth we have them. Fresh water stripers until you give out. NO solid water here, we fish all year. Taxes not bad and no State Income taxes. Electric prices not bad and did I say all the fishing you want. Drive less then 2 hours from home and be able to fish the best waters within the states. Great food near you, and some of it the best you will find. Â Â Â Now for the bad, Hot steaming heat in the summer, but fishing is outstanding. Most winters we do get a chance of ice or show. But have been many Jan days short sleeve shirt while catching Big Small Mouth. Not close to any mall's if that is a bad thing. Â We do have some Meth heads but the Gene pool for those are killing there self's off fast. Pickwick Does have the paper mill that stinks and uses that dumping credits they buy to Pollute our waters. But its here so we deal with it. Â Good luck with your search. Pete Quote
Lasher Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Don't rule out Raleigh NC. Â Falls Lake, Harris Reservoir, Kerr Lake, Jordan lake. Â Nice city with four season and stuff to do but not a big city. Â Good jobs and airport. Â Â Also the savannah river is Keowee, Hartwell, Russell, and Clarks Hills. Â All good lakes and some close enough to Murray and Santee Cooper with mild climates. Not alot of big towns around these lakes, but good fishing. Quote
Fishing-Vol Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 +1 for the Chattanooga, Tn area. Chic, Guntersville, and Pickwick are all close. Quote

I know that there is a nuclear power plant located in Oak Ridge, TN.  I was born & raised in the mountains & coal mining towns of Harlan County, KY, which is located right on the borders of VA & TN. After my mom & dad divorced my dad moved to Knoxville. He still lives in the east TN area.  I was a recruiter for the Marine Corps for 3 years & was stationed in Knoxville...by the way...I didn't volenteer to be a recruiter, I was "volen-TOLD!" lol.  Anyways, I fished Douglas Lake located in Sevierville, TN & it is a beautiful & wonderful lake. Growing up, we would travel from my home in Harlan County down to the lakes in east TN...mainly Norris & Cherokee...both great lakes for nearly any species & both have quality smallmouth in them.  I also fished Ft Loudon lake while I was on recruiting duty...but didn't enjoy it because of all the pleasure boat traffic. I don't mind pleasure boaters...but when they scream by right next to your boat as your trolling the banks...well, it makes me want to cast a Zara Spook at them so that I can hook them up & snag them off of their boat or jet ski! lol  Seriously, east TN is AMAZING! It is BEAUTIFUL & that's mine & my wife's dream area to retire in! Quote

As for local Bass clubs, I didn't get too involved with any while I was there, though I know there were several. The Alcoa plant there (as best as I can recall) makes hot/cold, rolled, and ingot aluminum for various applications. I think the do a lot of recycling of aluminum cans, but that's about all I know of it. SSgt Hoskins said, "Not really familiar or either I don't quite understand what you're asking. Well, there *is* a small test reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, but the commercial (TVA) nuclear plant is down I-75 a bit (about halfway to Chattanooga) on the Watts Bar reservoir. Spring City is about the closest town to that plant. Watts Bar has some decent fishing pretty much year round. There is another TVA Nuke plant farther south (near Soddy Daisy, just outside Chattanooga) on Chickamauga lake. Never fished there, so can't say.
