Super User rockchalk06 Posted December 9, 2013 Super User Posted December 9, 2013 I'm looking for guys who own both or either one. I want to try a 684CB for jerkbaits and topwaters, but no one around here has one locally to try or hold. I have an Avid MHM cranking rod and its just way to whippy for anything but cranking. I have been eyeballing the 684CB for some time but want to know how does it compare in flex to say the Avid cranking rod or better yet the 6'6MF Avid? Thanks in advance! Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted December 9, 2013 Super User Posted December 9, 2013 If you don't like the "whip" in the mhm, have you considered the 68mxf avid for jerkbaits/topwater? It's a shame Dobyn's doesn't offer a 68mxf. i'd give up my ltb for one sight unseen for jerkbaits and topwaters. Quote

I like how it feels, but I'm slowly switching over to all Dobyns. I'm not 100% sure i want to switch yet though. Quote

I use it for shallow to medium cranks, spooks, and some smaller poppers. Great sensitivity and balance. *edit For jerkbaits I'm throwing a 6'7 *** M/F. Some of the guys up here recommended it to me earlier in the year and fell in love with the rod/brand. Works solid for Jerks but I find myself throwing flukes on more often.
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 9, 2013 Super User Posted December 9, 2013 My dedicated jerkbait set up is the Avid AVC66MF/ Scorpion 1000 supertuned/ Sunline Super Natural #12. The description (MF) is a bit misleading, the tip is soft. This is not suited for jigs or soft plastics, but PERFECT for treble hooks, especially jerkbaits and topwater! 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 9, 2013 Super User Posted December 9, 2013 I don't own any Dobyns rods but I know those that do and I have fished with both a champion and a savvy, from what I've noticed is even the graphite cranking rods are all too soft for jerkbaits, it is just the way it is. If I was going to use a Dobyns rod for jerkbaits it would be the 682C, and that is just my preference, the graphite cranking rods all seem too soft as I said, even the medium heavy models have too soft tips but the 682 should be close to perfect. Grantman83 Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I use the champ 684c for smaller jerkbaits and poppers. If I need to go heavier or bigger, I have the 705cb. I use braid on the 684cb for add alittle snap to the softer rod and add a fluoro or mono leader when necessary. They are releasing a 6'3 version for topwater and jerkbaits of people like even shorter rods. Quote

I'm not 100% sure i want to switch yet though. you do . i'd switch over 100% if they made a 68mxf. dobyns reel seats are much more comfortable. the jerkbait/topwater, as i'm sure you know, is really all preference when it comes to the tip. i prefer the XF tip because for me it's easier to work the bait to make it do exactly what i want it to. i always felt that /w a cranking rod i couldn't get the cadence down. a MXF (st.croix) has a very fast tip but it goes right to backbone which is what i want. i don't like the moderate action for those long distance hook sets /w mono and fluoro. if you were to use braid, which is all the rage right now /w topwaters, i'm sure you probably wouldn't have much of an issue. Ive got the exact same Kent, except for I have a CU50E instead. Mainly off your recommendation and a few others. I have yet to land a fish over 2#'s. That fast action kind worries me with treble baits. I've had bad luck in the past with a fast action over a moderate. How does it handle for larger fish? Quote

I had tried jerkbaits and walk the dog lures with my MHM Avid and I couldn't get the cadence down to save my life. That said, the rod loads like a wet noodle at the tip, but has a hellova back bone for cranking. That may be the only rod I never switch over to or get rid of as it is absolutely perfect for the way I like to crank. I almost never have to even set the hook. I just pivot my body away from the bait and it loads up perfect. Quote
Grantman83 Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Maybe I am not good enough to really notice. With the braid I still feel like every snap is crisp and to the point. The graphite helps too. It's a very fine balance between a rod with a good amount of give but a line with no stretch. The rod has enough bend to keep them pinned and can snap a cast out there. Quote

Super User WRB Posted December 10, 2013 Super User Posted December 10, 2013 Gary Dobny's won the 2009 US Open using LC Gunfish top water lures and small LC crankbait, you might want to ask Gsry's advice which rod he recommends. Tom Quote
Grantman83 Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 From an interview "Gary says, “I throw most of my jerkbaits on a 704. Some I throw on a 705. If you are throwing a Pointer 128, you’re going to want a 705. A Pointer 100 can go either way. A 704 is a little light for it but it’s great for a 705. The StaySee 90, I think that 704 rod is tailor made for it. The Megabass Vision 110 with the 704, personally I love that combination; it has caught me so many fish lately it’s just unbelievable. If I am throwing the Vision 110 MAGNUM, then I like the 705. Those are pretty much the baits that I’ve been throwing lately – the Megabass and the Lucky Craft. They’re all just phenomenal baits.” Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted December 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted December 10, 2013 Thanks. Man I wish someone local had one. No one stocks Dobyns here. I guess I need to see how a 7 foot rod works for me. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 10, 2013 Super User Posted December 10, 2013 The AVC66MF is responsive when working a lure, but forgiving when fighting a fish. 1 Quote

This is from my experience on the 6'6" M/F Avid - Freaking AWESOME for Jerkbaits and Topwaters. Just something "ABOUT IT". I also use it for swim jigs and spinnerbaits on occassion. I've gotten rid of my other 3 St. Croix rods, but had to keep this one. Nothing I've used has yet to dethrone this rod for jerkbaits. 1 Quote

Hogsticker Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 I've been in the same boat. Fast action lost me to many fish, mod fast didn't recover quickly enough. Granted, actions differ between brands. I'm gonna try a Champion 635C. The 4 power on the longer graphite crankin rods was to slow, so I'm hoping the shorter heavier powered rod will be the ticket. In the mean time I feel I've found the perfect blend with the Cumara xfast reaction rods..1st gen. The problem is the shortest 6'9 rods are a bit long for jerks. I also want to get my hands on the new Fenwick HMG 6'6 fast. These rods are priced right Quote
