eatlessfish Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I know that it is popular to use fluoro because it sinks and mono because it has a little more stretch for cranks but what about braid for deep divers? I have used mono and didn't like it because of the lack of sensitivity, but I am currently using fluoro but I feel it nicks too easily and don't want to retie constantly like I do or loose a big fish. So is 50lb power pro and a softer sweeping hookset my solution? I know braid is good for lipless cranks in grass, but what are you guys opinion on it for deep divers? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 i use the 8lb diameter power pro super slick on a cranking specific rod and i like it a lot, more than when i used flouro. I don't really think the whole flouro sinks, braid floats argument is to relevant in a moving bait. More important is line diameter as a the smaller the diameter the further it will dive. I just tie a snap on to the braid and i am good with different cranks all day long. 2 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 What is causing the nicks in your line? Braid has less abrasion resistance than fluoro so what may be causing a nick in fluoro could cause braid to break/snap. If its from backlashes then yeah braid holds-up better. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 I use nothing but braid for all my cranking. I use a graphite cranking rod so pulling hooks out isn't an issue. As with fly fisher I use an 8# diameter 30# braid and love it. Like quake said, if your getting nicks in fluoro, braid is going to be even worse. Braid had way less abrasion resistance than fluoro. Sounds like you need to jump to a heavier fluoro or a more abrasion resistant fluoro. General rule of thumb, if your dragging your bait through stuff that can test up your line, your bait is in the right place. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I have used braid with a glass cranking rod and over all i liked it. i used 30# power pro, but now i typically use either 12 lb floro, or 15 lb hybrid line, I feel the strike to land ratio is just a little better. Mitch Quote
eatlessfish Posted December 6, 2013 Author Posted December 6, 2013 It's not from backlashes it's from catfish fins when a cat tries to get my 6XD and tangles in the line. It actually happens a lot at the main lake I fish. Almost 1 out of every 3 or 4 fish is a cat!! I'm going to switch to power pro and see how I like it! I can always switch back if I don't like it, or my catch ratio goes down. Thanks for the input guys, braid is going to get a shot!! Quote
Virtuoso Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Ill stick with mono or fluoro. Diameter determines depth. Good FC if in an abrasive environment. Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 Braid with a leader, but not a FC leader, a copoly leader, if you are worried about abrassion wear then ----> PLine CXX as leader is the solution, CXX is ridiculously strong and abrassion resistant. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 I think braid is great with cranks - until you get it stuck. Once you get a deep diver stuck on braid, it is a pain. Your extendable pole probably won't reach it, even if the wind will let you get on top of it. Your hound dog type lure retriever might work, except when you first got snagged you thought it was a fish and so you set the hook and so the hooks are deeper into the branch than they might be with mono. Maybe you can get on the other side of the snag and pull it off - good luck with that. After 5 minutes of messing with it, your best option is to wrap the braid around a boat cleat and back it off with the trolling motor. Don.t try jerking on it real hard with your hands - you will cut your hand. Don't try jerking real hard with your rod - you can break a rod doing that or maybe even bend a spool shaft. Like I said, throwing cranks with braid is great. As a general rule, you cranks will run deeper. Your sense of feel might be enhanced. Once you get it stuck, it is a pain. Pick your poison. Quote
Brian Needham Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 . I use a graphite cranking rod so pulling hooks out isn't an issue. you mean glass? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 you mean glass? No it's graphite. Avid cranking rod. Quote
Brian Needham Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 reason I ask is not pulling hooks out is a leading reason most people use glass. Glass is more parabolic. I use graphite too....I just thought it might been typo. Quote

I've been wanting to upgrade to a Champion for cranking, but i really like the way this rod reacts.. Quote
