Th1317 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 It seems like Murphy's Law was in full effect on me today. Was throwing a Carolina Rig, got bit, set the hook, and apparently the knot slipped. "Ok, no big deal that happens, I'll just grab a new hook and try again", I think to myself. Think again. As i reach down to grab a hook from a pile of tackle on the side of my Hobie Pro Angler my wool gloves make contact with a Gamakatsu cocktail via Smithwick Rogue, and that stuff get buried in the fabric. With my free hand i try to wiggle the two rear hooks free, luckily the front hook hadn't penetrated. BUT I should have taken the glove off of my free hand, because wouldn't you know it, that front treble found its way into that glove. At this point i am essentially handcuffed by a jerkbait, rendering me unable to slip off the gloves with hand. The way the hooks had penetrated my gloves, I was very close to penetrating the skin if i pulled the gloves off using my hands. So i try using my teeth to free one of the gloves, which results in a solid flow of blood from my lips as the friction from pulling at the gloves scrape open my chapped lips. By now I'm feeling pretty defeated--screaming obscenities, bleeding from the face and bound by treble hooks. Luckily I was in Austin, Texas where this sort of behavior really probably isnt beyond the norm, otherwise people might have thought i was nuts. I eventually got the gloves off and managed an ok bag, things always work out. But holy cow i almost lost it today. 1 Quote

hotdogin Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Towards the end of summer last year I fishing along the bank of a small lake and made my way down to a tree that had fallen in the water. After numerous casts with different baits I still didn't have any bites so I decided to make one final cast. Worst cast of my life. My lure went into the branches of a nearby tree so naturally I slow reeled in so as to not make it worse, but sure enough, that thing was in there. So after 10-15 of relentless tugging the tip of my GL2 snapped off and my line was still intact. It was at that point I finally just cut my line and guess what, my lure fell out of the branches and into the water. So as an attempt to save at least one thing that day I tied on larger lure with larger hooks and attempted to hook my now floating lure. After 20 minutes of that and words that a sailor has never heard I finally put up my white flag and went home....at least you had a bite. Quote
Boomer_bassin Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 my mistake day was yesterday, had nothing to do with fishing. My wife miscarried for the second time this year. That's three babies I'll get to hold someday when the good Lord takes me home, but I got out for a few hours today and man did the water and little bit of fishing sooth me. Its amazing how therapeutic fishing can be! I'm in a much better state now than before. Quote
michang5 Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Long-time Austinite here. Glad you freed yourself because no one was probably outside to call for help. Everyone was at Costco buying bottled water, sterno and fire logs in anticipation of Snow-mageddon 2013. We're a bunch of Toms-wearing wusses around here. 1 Quote

But yes, fishing really is great way to free your mind at least momentarily from what troubles you may be experiencing. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 My flood of 2 months ago is still not totally resolved, a new problem seems rise daily, contractors in Florida are notorious for not showing up. Some many un related situations have occurred as well don't have the energy to list them all. When I read about a miscarriage makes my situations just a minor inconvenience, even having the hook removed from leg wasn't really a big deal, a little blood, a needle and some time. Quote

Super User Sam Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 How is this for a bad day? October 6, 2013 Pamunkey River in Virginia Weather was to be partly cloudy with a high of 70 and no wind So what happened? Gigantic cold front came through at 8:30AM and shut down the fishing. Saw it on the morning's horizon and just watched it move in from the east. East winds kill Virginia fishing. Temperatures not out of the 50s. Overcast and nasty skies. Wind picked up to 15 MPH putting white caps on parts of the river. Odometer tube came out and put water on my feet, legs, shoes, socks, pants and in the boat until I could put the boat against a dock and reattach it. Not one bite. Not a one. Got cold and wet. None of the other guys in the club were doing anything due to the change in the weather and wind. Went back to ramp and docked boat without any problem on first try. No one around to help me celebrate docking the boat on first try at the ramp. Went home at noon. Day continued to be miserable. Then had to get ready for my knee replacement that Wednesday by going to hospital for tests, classes and my doctor for a pre-op physical. Have not been fishing since the great Pamunkey River adventure. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 7, 2013 Global Moderator Posted December 7, 2013 I tried to fish today, while it was 11 degrees out with a stiff 20mph wind from the north. Caught a couple small channel cats on a jigging spoon before my reel and guides were so iced up and my hands were so numb I couldn't take it anymore. Boomer, thoughts and prayers your way man. Quote

I share Sir Snookalot's sentiment......this puts the little things in perspective (hope your flood stuff gets resolved soon, SS!) Another disappointment yesterday, not only did the cabinet maker come 3 hours late but didn't come prepared to finish the job. They promise to come at 8:00 am today and finish, I'm so po'd that 1 minute late I won't allow them in my home, a safe bet they won't be on time. I do not care how much money and extra time it costs me to get another cabinet maker to finish up, I won't let them make a red cent off me. I hope they sue. 1 Quote
