Backlash123 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Happy Holidays everyone. I Recently joined this forum and very excited to begin my new career as a bass fisherman. I've fished saltwater all my life, and fished freshwater occasionally. I've recently decided to convert to full-time freshwater fishing with the sale of my saltwater boat, and purchase of a bass boat. I've always fished the L67A canal, my question is, is the L67C (which I believe to be the canal just north on the levee, not sure though) accessible via bass boat, if so, is it safe to run the boat in that canal, because it looks like a much narrower canal (using Google Earth). Any help you folks could provide would be much appreciated. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 5, 2013 Super User Posted December 5, 2013 There is no problem running all the way from Holiday Park to SR41, if the water is high enough. South west of the miami river there is a weir with a bouyee in the middle of the canal. Be careful there if the water is low. I have not been out there in over a year and they are doing changes in some of the everglades canals. That canal is 10 feet deep in most spots. There are some fresh water springs in the three pines area. Summer the water is a little cooler and in winter the water is a little warmer. This makes for good fishing. It is a long run that far south west. Dont pass up the Alley to the north. You can run north from L67 to the Alley. Some fantastic fishing at times, numbers can be unbelieveable with 200 fish a day possible when water is low. Quote
Backlash123 Posted December 6, 2013 Author Posted December 6, 2013 Thanks for the response geo. I see in your profile you mention "Little 67". I've heard about that, but I'm not sure were that's at. I thought it's the canal just past the ramp into L67, on the . Is that correct? Maybe I'll see you out there someday. I'm fishing in a white/black/red Nitro Z6. Quote
gar-tracker Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I think your refering to the Magic Canal.l 67 C Theres a ramp by monroe station that lets you access that canal. 27 south from Pines Blvd turn right on 41 go about 2 miles to Krome make another right and head north to the bend, youll see a pump house and a grade road that leads to a dirt levee, go over the levee and theres a ramp. Iv personbally weighed a 13lber at that ramp for a guy. Narrow but deep, has coral rocks alond the side Febuary the hogs line up bedding on the coral. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 6, 2013 Super User Posted December 6, 2013 Little 67, or L67c is a narrow canal you must access from SR 41 at the 20 bend near the plane crash memorial. The canal has been partically filled in on the north east portion close to the Miami canal. You can not run all the way out there anymore. I got a report from a friend that fished it last week. Lots of small fish being caught right now. The canal has a small dirt parking lot and a good ramp. The canal is very narrow with sharp rocky walls. Stay in the middle to stay safe. I would go with another boat because it could be days before another boat comes . There are a few pad fields in the middle of the canal. Good luck if you go. Quote
topwaterrob Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 It is for sure a tight canal. Fish can be had though. Quote
gar-tracker Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Yes hard to fish with 2 guys, you have to pick a bank and both take a side. But deep. There used to be an old man, Camping Frank that lived out there in a van and he built some great spoons that became ledgendary in the Glades. He used to keep an eye on everyones cars. Quote

Super User geo g Posted December 7, 2013 Super User Posted December 7, 2013 Wow that's a long time ago. I remember him. Just got another report from a guy that fished it yesterday. He had 5 fish for 24 lbs, and they caught a mess of dinks too. Don't run away out there in low light conditions. The gov. put a rock wall of boulders to block the canal. Not well marked. Good luck Quote
Backlash123 Posted December 8, 2013 Author Posted December 8, 2013 Thanks guys. Sounds like a possibility, I'll stick to the main L67 for now, until I get more familiar with the boat and area. Any tips you guys are willing to share would be helpful. Fished out there today and caught a few. Used a black worm with charttruese tail, with a peg weight. I'll keep workin it. Quote
gar-tracker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 The Magic canal was always my favortite canal in the whole system its cut right into the glades with a little distance from the dykes. Circa 78 I got my first Jon Boat I used to go down there all the time. It was so nice out there, lots of great memories. I have some old fish photos I have to dig out and show you guys some time. Super User geo g Posted December 10, 2013 Super User Posted December 10, 2013 If your putting in from the SR41 side, I would run up the L67 to the bend. After the big bend you will see cuts every 1/4 of a mile on your left side. Go to the 4th big cut and fish back toward 41. I would fish the cuts hard and try all depths with a fluke or senko. Silver or Gold Rapala #9 or #11, chugbugs, and spooks have done real well in the morning. With a senko I would let it sink and work all levels right at the cut drop off. There are big bass out there. For some reason the pads on the opposite side across from the cuts have also been holding quality fish. Any watermelon fluke or senko is a good color. Work the cuts slowly and with repeated casts. Good luck on the BIG L. Quote

I've heard some horror stories about people breaking into trucks out there. I never had a problem in the past, but then again I hadn't been out there in 15 years. Are you guys experiencing any issues? Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 17, 2013 Super User Posted December 17, 2013 I never had a problem, but I always parked at the ramp right on 41 and not the steep ramp on the big L. The other ramp is just past the airboat tour site on 41 on the north side of the road. It is a small angled ramp just past the flood control gate you drive over. There is plenty of parking right next to the ramp. The visibility is better there then on the Big L site. Quote
Backlash123 Posted December 20, 2013 Author Posted December 20, 2013 Again Geo, thanks for all the info. I'm headed out there this weekend. Tight lines. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 21, 2013 Super User Posted December 21, 2013 Let us know how you do, and good luck! Quote
Backlash123 Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 I ended up fishing L29 canal. I'm in the process of joining a fishing club, and they had a tournament which I attended. I ended with only 3 legal fish totally just under 3lbs (caught 8 or 10 in total). Other members did much better than me (I have ALOT to learn). I used a buzzbait, and a Zoom Horny Toad predawn, and caught several others on Flukes. Quote
Super User geo g Posted December 26, 2013 Super User Posted December 26, 2013 Great learning experience each trip out. Good luck next time. I learn something all the time. Great to go back and see how much your technique changes from year to year. Quote
BigAL Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 i use to fish out there back in the early 90's in a 10 ft bass hunter had plenty of 100 fish days out there we were actually fishing the day the plane crashed out there it was a few miles from us.Be very careful out there there is certain parts of that area that are tribal and us laws dont apply.
