A story of complacency- Sunday morning around 1030, starting to get chilly, rifle between the legs propped up against the rest, have yet to see anything other than the 3 dozen squirrel running around. Starting to crave some coffee and sandwiches, all the while daydreaming.....then it happens...Look to my left, a spot where he shouldn't have showed up but he did, never heard him come in(d**n squirrels barking). At first all I saw was antlers, like buck of a lifetime set,not a state record but a record for most any hunter, slowly I start pulling the rifle up all the while my heart is pounding so fast and my breath looks like a steam locomotive at full throttle. As soon as he steps out from behind the tree I have the rifle nearly to my shoulder and he spots me dead on,get my eye to the scope and all I see is Mr.Buck waving his white flag into the brush. Ok well that sucks, big time, adrenaline pumping with no release. Huge letdown, kicking myself hard, I give my self some reassurance that tomorrow is another day....5 mins later, BANG, neighbors on the backside of the property took a shot, now if it was him? Not sure, more than likely though... All I do know is that will be my last time I get complacent, you never know when and where it will happen....Lesson learned the hardest way.

It happens to me alot lol. That big 8 I got this year with the bow was after getting bored and frustrated with squirrels I had a field tip nicked and at full draw about to smoke another squirrel when he came charging in. He saw me and stoped for a minute but I slowly changed arrows and he put his head back down ad came charging in like he was. Better luck next time though its tough on them slow days

Its happened to allot of people, I was bored one day took my grunt tube out, I swear I was making a racket. Look up and a little six was making his way toward me, put the scope on him and he freezes, but he isn't looking at me. What had his attention was about thirty yards to my left. I turn my head, man what a buck, came in from behind. He had no idea I was there, swing the rifle just as he puts his head down and charges the other buck! Was cool to see, but I would rather have those antlers, he was huge.

Well its nice to hear Im not the only one!!! These squirrels are driving me nuts though!Lol.... It is weird how bucks just show up, like they know when we arent expecting them! I know i cant eat the antlers and so on but like you retiredbosn, I want the antlers on my wall!! But alas there was relief yesterday morning, a few does but I heard two bucks scrapping it out so they are still there, think Im gonna give the grunt a few tries myself this weekend and see what happens, plenty of season left..

Thanks for the words guys!! Good luck to all!!

I hear ya on the part about him not showing up where he should have. Theres more stories about guys using the bathroom and bulwinkle walking up lol. I've had a lot of solitary bucks just show up from thin air like that. You hunt a stand and think you have them patterned and boom hes on you when/where you dont expect. Had a young 9 pt do it yesterday to me. I could sense deer moving in to my right but couldn't move to look as he stared me down for about 5 long minutes. The wind kept swirling and he was nerved up for half an hour just staring at 25 yards as other deer moved in.
