Smallmouth Hunter Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I just don't see a reason to try Hammer rods when they have no reputation. Stick with what works; you know the old saying: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If I were you, I would spend the money on a proven rod that will perform very nicely such as the daiwa rods, dobyns rods, shimano rods, 13 rods, powell, etc. Same goes for duckett reels. I don't have enough money to spend on fishing where I can buy offbrand reels just to give them a shot. I stick with what works and is proven. I made the mistake of trying a new brand twice last year, and I was not impressed with either.. Daiwa and shimano all the way. (not trying to be a "fanboy", just saying what I prefer) Quote
WiregrassRiverRat Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 THIS JUST IN: Pictures posted on their FB page of the reel and stated it was in the last stages of production.. so I am assuming they will release right before or at iCast 2014.. of course ghost rods were supposed to be out in October.. I mean November.. I mean December.. I mean eventually right? Quote
Fishwhittler Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Looks like whatever the issues Duckett ran into, they went with the same company in the end. More Doyo OEM's…whatever. One more set of features to choose from. Now, I'm genuinely excited about the 13 reels. It's been years since any new company came onto the scene with its own internally-designed and produced reel. I hope *** does exactly that. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I think these companies getting into the reel market will only benefit us(the anglers) through competition in the marketplace, wether that means that prices will drop or quality of reels will go up, either way we win... Mitch 1 Quote
Megastink Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 They look great! When you have an error in YOUR design on an outsourced product, you dont SWITCH PRODUCERS. You change your design. Thats how production works... I'm personally looking forward to trying these reels. Quote

Thats how production works... I'm personally looking forward to trying these reels.I really don't care too much what Duckett does; their reels looks like they're going to be more of the same-old-same-old, nothing more than Revo's, Speed Spools, Pro Qualifiers, or Presidents in different clothes and with slightly different features. Underneath, the reels will still be very closely related. I'd like to see more innovation and less rebranding. If I had the money and was so inclined, I could contact Doyo and order up a thousand reels with my own paint scheme on them and whatever other features I thought I wanted. Slap my name on there, and suddenly I've got my on reel company. Nothing wrong with that, but there's a significant difference between doing that and actually designing my own reel from the ground up. These companies are nothing more than importers, when you get right down to it. They choose the features they think will sell well, they make sure they get a certain level of quality, but if you take the clutch out of a Revo you can swap it right into a Speed Spool without noticing a difference. I find it very difficult to get excited over one more Korean import with the same insides as reels from six or ten other brands. 1 Quote
Megastink Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Some specs from Duckett's Facebook: -about 5.5oz -Ceramic bearings -Will come in 5, 6, and 7:1 ratios (or thereabouts) -Available in LEFTIES!!!!!!!!!! No word on price point yet, but it has all the makings of a $250-$300 reel. I know you Naysayers are thinking "I'm not gonna pay that much money for a product from a reputation-free company..." Boyd Duckett HIMSELF tests each product on the water. If he doesnt like it, he doesnt put his name on it. PERIOD. Thats the the Ghosts keep getting pushed back. They are coming, but only when Mr. Duckett thinks they are perfect. Who can argue with that? 1 Quote

Mitch You're 110% right. When daiwa released the tatula, a reel that had TONS of hype and is now quickly gaining popularity, I immediately thought "can't wait to see how shimano answers this". Well now there is a new curado to be released sometime next year (so I've heard) which is supposed to be raised in price (so Shimano can build it nicer, closer to d/e series) to $180, and hopefully will have some cool new features like CI4 sideplates or a different style of the classic VBS system. Megastink Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 More info: -made in KOREA (just like Lews, Abu, many others) -Wider spool -Centrifugal and Magnetic braking -$250 for the high-end model -$160 for the mid grade model (not sure what separates the two) Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Last posts by Duckett fishing on facebook: "dual braking system...magnetic..centrifugal" "thanks for the comments so far. to answer some of the questions. yes on the ceramics, its a low profile reel. made a slighter wider spool for added cast ability. made in Korea. the abu lews comment is pretty close. you have to remember that our president was with abu for a long period of time and we also like lews for their ease of use out of the box. very light, in and around 5.5 ounces. yes on all 3 speeds and yes on the lefties. we are confident on our internals and breaking system. still not sure on the cosmetics. thanks everyone for your feedback so far and thank you for your support." "looking at $249 on the high end and $159 on the mid range." "quick question for the made in US comment. who makes reels in the USA?" (in response to someone asking if they will be made in USA, obviously they won't be) JUST TO CLARIFY, I HAVE NO PREFERENCE OF WHETHER IT IS MADE IN US OR NOT, THIS QUESTION WAS ASKED BY SOMEONE ON FACEBOOK, NOT ME. I WAS JUST PUTTING MORE INFO OUT THERE. What I am hearing is that it will be ANOTHER PURE FISHING REHASH REEL made in Korea.. I am wondering how this reel weighs 5.5 oz?!? Quote
Megastink Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 What I am hearing is that it will be ANOTHER PURE FISHING REHASH REEL made in Korea.. What I'm hearing is the lovechild of a Revo Premier and a Lews Team Pro for $50 less than both of them... Why dont you naysayers relax a little. A lot of great reels are made in Korea, including Abu and Lews. Performance is performance, no matter where its made. If you dont give a product a chance because its not made where you wish it were, thats your problem. You can speculate all you want to, you dont know anything until you fish with one. *drops mic* 1 Quote
Trey Harpel Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Thats better if made in Korea as it does look like a Hybrid Revo/Lews, which are both solid reels.. Lews has stepped up and made a great reel for the money.. I dont care how good or bad it is as I wont touch the reel, Only to Tune them up for customers.. If the reel holds up it should be a solid seller for Duckett.. Quote

Grantman83 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Boyd was sponsored by Abu for a long time so maybe he just really liked their reels. If pure fishing is going make them, it just makes sense in that they no longer pay him to use their reels but now make money off a new line under his name. I wouldn't be surprised to see several of the duckett rod pros begin to use the reels as well. I as well as anyone appreciate asthetically pleasing reels and how they match with my rods. People may complain a out oem, but that doesn't mean that certain reels are different and have different specs. Lew's is a solid company that has solid products. Same with Abu. Internally they may be similar, but there are differences. I may own mostly daiwas now, but it isn't because my lews reels were bad or didn't function. I simply wanted reels I could customize more. If the ducketts are built on a solid platform and perform as well as the TP, then people will like them. The more the merrier IMO. Nothing wrong with having a ton of choices. If they work, balance well and match, it's a plus to everyone Quote

I didn't say ANYWHERE that the reels won't perform, I simply said that they will be a rehash of Pure fishing's other reels. Abu and Lew's, along with pure fishing's other brands, make fine reels, but I am simply not interested in them. I prefer Daiwa and Shimano myself. I just don't understand this craze over a reel that most of us have practically used already since it will be very similar to the Abu revo stx and Lew's TP. I don't see what new technology they could put in this reel since this is the first reel duckett has made, and there is nothing to learn from for them. It obviously will have the dual braking (most likely the exact kind we have seen in the TP and STX with 4/6 pins for centrifugal, and 5 magnets on sideplate adjusted externally by dial), carbon sideplates, aluminum or possibly carbon/graphite composite frame (like pinnacle has done), and ceramic bearings which is a pretty cool feature. I don't care if it is made in Korea, Japan, or China.. Pure fishing makes their reels in Korea, and they are not bad reels.. Notice how I didn't put that part in caps. *throws mic out window* Quote

However, those could be Lazerlure Ducketts from a few years ago. I guess we'll see. They could show themselves at the Classic, whatever they are. Quote

Megastink Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 On Duckett's Facebook page, they posted some pics of the FINAL batch of duckett reels! They offer a 320 and a 360 model. No idea on specs, but they're pretty! I'll post details as soon as they do. If someone wants to post pics, by all means go for it. Quote
Megastink Posted July 7, 2014 Author Posted July 7, 2014 Hey everyone! Duckett just posted a few pages from their 2015 catalog showing the new reels. There are two models: the 320, which will retail for $189, 7 bearings, 14lb drag, dual cast control. 360 will have 11 bearings and retail for $250. Other features are listed, but that seemed to jump out first. No word on weight yet. Quote
