For baitcasting reels that have a disconnecting level wind, the spool bearings would be the only areas of the reel that when cleaned would affect casting?  Am I missing something else too obvious for me?

Palming side bearing, cast control bearing, and behind the engagement pin (shaft support bearing) on some...

Polish brake race, inside pinion gear, spool shaft (if one peice) and ends, shims,.... :Victory:

To cast, the clutch needs to work properly, as well.  Nothing worse than a sticky clutch.

Thanks for the responses... got what I wanted to know.  I want to keep the casting "clean" throughout the season, but will send the reels for a "deep cleaning" and lube to a professional less often.

That's a good plan. I pretty much clean out the spool support bearings two three times a year, and get to my own reels about every 18 months.  Once a year is probably good for most folks for a total breakdown and deep clean.
