JWOA Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I did read on here and checked other sources. All Star rods are now owned by Shakespeare. Ive also read that they have been down graded the quality inside the rod. I wanted to know if they a great rod for the money I plan to get another 100 dollar rod Quote
BigBassBarry Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 All star rods use to be pretty good rods. I am not a fan of carrot stix I have broke 3 this year. And I have broke one duckett. It was like pulling teeth to get the replacements from Carrot stix. Duckett was an easy transaction. before this year I have only broke one rod in my life fishing, and this year I broke 4, Crazy. 1 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted December 1, 2013 Super User Posted December 1, 2013 Allstar used to be a Texas based company but then sold out to Shakespeare. They had a pretty good following until that happened. I had 2 customs made out of new old stock from Allstar. A builder bought a bunch of their unlabeled blanks. Awesome rods. Kinda wish I hadn't sold them. I'm sure they still have ok rods but better ones can be had used or new for the 100-125 dollar range. There's some used Powell's in the flea market for $100 shipped right now. Personally I don't think there's a $100 rod out there that'll compare to the powell endurance line. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 1, 2013 Super User Posted December 1, 2013 I have one All Star rod and it is a pleasure to use it. I was very disappointed when they were sold to Shakespeare. I was still hoping that Shakespeare would continue to line. Any strong name brand rod in your price range should do well. Remember, there will be winter sales coming up for rods so you may want to wait until the Christmas or the February sales to make a purchase. This will give you more time to do your research. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 1, 2013 Super User Posted December 1, 2013 Relatively recently, Pure Fishing (parent company of Berkley, among other brands) purchased Shakespeare and now, as far as I can figure out, All Star and Shakespeare are being run as separate divisions. I've bounced around different web sites trying to figure out who owns/controls who and it can get confusing. On the All Star Web site, there is a contact number, if someone were really interested, that would be a place to start. I read somewhere (and I can't remember where) that All Star rods were being positioned as being primarily available through Academy Sports, but I can't confirm that. 1 Quote

Chris186 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 My only experience with All Star was about 10 years ago. I had bought one from Dicks for $50 on sale. I used it for a year, then in my last club tourney I set the hook on what eneded up being a 4lb largemouth when I heard "crack!". The rod snapped completely in half. I wasnt really sad because I got it cheap, but it is the only rod I have ever broken by setting the hook and never bought another one. Quote
rangerjockey Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 The old houston made all stars were some great rods. I think I bought mine about 30 years ago and still use the Zell Rowland TWS. It's a great pop r and spook jr. rod even by todays standards. .. I think there are better choices in todays market starting with the Denali mentioned earlier. 1 Quote

I talk to a member of their pro staff a good deal, and he told me the same thing. The website of All Star states the rods are available "exclusively" through Academy Sports. oe The same guy says that right now, pure fishing is really trying to push their primary brands, Berkley and Abu, therefore they are selling the new all stars as an Academy exclusive. It's not any less quality, but I guess it could be considered a house brand even though it's a name brand. Quote
MacP Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Am I better off just buying another Abu Garcia Veritas *** seems to be super popular. So do Bass Pro Carbonlites. I've not fished them. In the $100 range, I love the Okuma EVX. Light, great action, and good looking. I mentioned this in your other rod thread Don't discount St. Croix Mojos either. Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 4, 2013 Super User Posted December 4, 2013 If you want a rod with the quality of the old All Star brand get a Tour Star, the folks at Tour Star are the guys that left All Star after the takeover from Shakespeare, I don´t personally own a Tour Star but I´ve fished with some of their rods and they are very nice rods, if I weren´t in the "I don´t want/need more stuff !" state of mind I would seriousñy consider a Tour Star if I were to purchase another rod. Smokinal Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I have broken the first 8 inches off 3 of them by swinging fish. And these weren't giants, we're talkin 2-3 lbers. I swing 3's all day with every other rod I own and never had an issue. I don't think I'd buy another All Star. Quote
JWOA Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Ive read this post in a different bass fishing forum they said the exact same thing I have broken the first 8 inches off 3 of them by swinging fish. Super User AK-Jax86 Posted December 5, 2013 Super User Posted December 5, 2013 I had an allstar wacky worm rod 6'10". I broke the rod and took it back to academy and ended up getting two Waterloo Rods $170 retail each on clearance for $39.99. So I got 2 rods and roughly $20 worth of tackle for price of 1 allstar rod. I enjoyed the rod while I had it. My buddy took my advice and got him an allstar rod too and he likes it a lot. Now I use my Waterloo for worms and cranks and my St Croix for FROGGIN Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 5, 2013 Super User Posted December 5, 2013 I purchased an im 10 allstar med 8/17 spinning labeled a redfish rod about 4 years ago. The intent of use for this rod was bass caught from high banked canals, I owned this rod for about 2 days. The backbone on this rod had trouble with 1# bass, redfish rod huh........Took it back and exchanged it for a Calico Jack which I'm still using daily. Quote
cajunpapi Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Get shimano in your price range, you should get a great rod with an over the counter warranty. Can't beat them. Quote
