Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 28, 2013 Super User Posted November 28, 2013 I've been back and forth for a few months on my swim jig rod. I finally had decided between 3 rods 745, 744 or 734. I throw a 1/2oz flip n swim jig with Havoc Subwoofer so it comes in at 3/4oz total. I mainly fish open water and get into some heavy brush and grass every once in awhile. I went away from jigs and XF tips and moved to fast tips. Since then my hook up ratio went way up.So I called and talked with Ron at Valley sports for a few then called and talked with Gary Dobyns for a good 30 minutes. Gary threw me for a loop and recommended the 735. Even over both DX series I was thinking of. He said it was the most popular swim jig rod he sells. Even told me if I didn't love it he'd buy it back as he could always use another on his boat lol. I have never really done any research on it but thought what the hell.So based off that, I dropped the hammer on one from Ron. I'm sitting here reading up on the 735. Everything I read tells me it's the go to frog rod. I don't see much for swim jigs. Then I can't believe it missed it, but the rod has an XF tip!!!!!Did I hear Gary wrong or get my numbers mixed up? Trey Harpel Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 It's prob one of the best all around rods Dobyns makes.. Jigs Frogs Pitching beavers T rigs Paddle tail swims I've never used it for swim jigs as I've got other rods for that.. I don't see why it wouldn't work well for SJs,.. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 29, 2013 Super User Posted November 29, 2013 the 735 is a great rod but the XF tip matched /w what i'm assuming is braid (only assuming based on your previous posts) is the last combo i'd want to use for swim jigs. you did get a great frog rod though Quote
Drewski73 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Ive seen multiple reviews from guys throwin 1/2 oz swim jigs on that rod, and they love it. Get it, try it, and if its not what you were looking for, hit Gary up to buy it back from you! Ive read so many posts where Gary surprised guys with his recommendation on a rod. They always end their paragraph with something along the lines of "It just shows how well Gary knows his rods". Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted November 29, 2013 Thanks Drew. Gary did the same with my tube rod as well. I've been reading and got a few messages from people telling me that the Dobyns XF is slower than most rod manufacturers XF. Quote

I've been reading and got a few messages from people telling me that the Dobyns XF is slower than most rod manufacturers XF. This is mostly what I've read as well. There's a topic on tt comparing the 735 and (I think) the 764. I also just bought the 735, and while it's primary purpose isn't going to be swimjigs, I'm definitely going to see how it handles them. I have a handful of 1/2oz NSCB Flip ' Swims as well Quote

It's supposed to be super cold. That jig is hard to beat. I love it. The salsa with a watermelon red subwoofer has produced better than all other baits combined last and this season. Quote
21farms Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 the champ 735 is an awesome rod and extremely versatile. i don't typically like extra fast rods because they're harder to cast with but the 735 has a very castable tip and i've had no problems casting texas-rigs with 3/16-ounce weights with mine and it has enough give to let the fish really "eat" the lure before you attempt setting the hook. tackletour's review of the 735 confirms that, although rated extra fast, its tip is closer to their baseline loomis 844 fast. my swim jig rod, the technique-specific powell max swim jig rod designed by jared lintner, is a true extra fast. I've been reading and got a few messages from people telling me that the Dobyns XF is slower than most rod manufacturers XF. No problem. I think youve bought a rod that will do what you want, and about 5 other things really well from what Ive read/heard. I fish with a guy that only has 734's and 735's on his deck. 4 of each. He fishes everything under 1/2oz on the 4's and everthing over (and frogs) on the 5's. Ive never fished a Dobyns XF, but his F is a slower fast in my opinion, and thats why I like them! 1 Quote

DelcoSol Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 God Rock, now you have me worried that I got the wrong rod. I got a 744 for my bottom contact rod. I don't throw larger than 1/2oz jigs but with a trailer I would imagine they're at least 3/4. I figured I would be good with the weight range up to 1oz? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 30, 2013 Author Super User Posted November 30, 2013 Gary told me the 744 is a great jig rod for the 3/4 oz range with light to medium cover. I like a bit heavier rod than most like to use though. As long as you are not in some serious cover the 44 will be fine. Its when you want to get in the nasty that you want to step up to a 5 power. I guess what I'm understanding is this 735 has a deeper flex that most 5 power rods for casting with a heavy backbone. Quote

I'll get it in on Monday. I'm hoping to be able to get out at least once this coming week before finals start, but we'll see. I know I'm going to be studying my butt off. If I do, I'll be sure to let you know 1 Quote
ColdSVT Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 Lol I say that because the 735 is a finalist for my next rod lol...735 or 13 ***. That is the question...or another LTB Quote

Brian Needham Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I use the 734 for my swimjigs. 1/2oz stikeking heavywire hook with a ragetail grub or 4in big hammer. I think it fits and loads perfectly for mile cast. Most of my swimjiggin is done on long cast, little cover.........at worst I am casting past a laydown, but never thick stuff. I think the 735 will be just fine. I do show a bit of concern since you are a braid guy. If I was throwing a swim jig in lillypads most of the time then the 735 would be PERFECT. That's my opinion....since you say you like a heavier than most rod per technique then I am going to say the 735 is going to be perfect FOR YOU, which is what you are aiming at. I picked up a 735 last week too, I am planning on 3/4oz 5in big hammer work. Quote
Brian Needham Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 just for the odd chance anyone is interested..... here is how I use my Dobyns. Not to hijack, but it would be nice to hear others chime in too.....then save the thread to your favorites then everyone has a good working knowledge of how others use their Dobyns. 733c- spinnerbait 3/8 and 1/2 12# FC 734c- spinnerbait 1/2 spinnerbaits, 1/2 swimjig, buzzbaits 15# FC 735c- not spooled up yet but will 3/4 big hammer 20# FC 704c- squarebills and jerkbaits #10 FC DX742 spinning- dropshot/shakyhead up to 1/4 #8FC DX742c- 3/16 shakeyhead and weighless senko #10FC DX743c- weightless senko and 1/4 tubes, trig, 1/4oz finesse jig #12FC DX744c- 3/8 football used as shakeyhead/tube or up to 3/8 Trig ragecraw, small 3-4in flutter spoon #15FC DX745c- Jigs 1/2- 3/4oz, big worms #20FC DX784cML- 5in flutter spoon, 1/2oz jig #20FC 805cbRm- bullshad #25yozuri 806hsb- hudd68, punker, ect #25 yozuri ones I want to add: DX746: for 1oz jigs and bighammers 804c: anything, I would use is as "catch all" rod anything I use a 4 power in above listed/ Carolina rig 806CB: more bullshad/ 1oz spinnerbaits (though I could use a rod already have) 795MLsb: swimbaiting, 1.5oz head ect ect as you can see if you read the listing on the blank and use it like that, the rod will be perfect ...... Except my bullshad rod, LMAO, I really do love how that 805cbrm throws it though. and might even get the new 806CB because of it...... I really don't worry about "total weight" I generally use the low end of the rating as my "head weight" and by the time you add trailer/worm you are in the low middle/dead middle of the range, which is where I love the Dobyns, other opinions may vary. I hope this helps someone, somewhere, sometime. 2 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 30, 2013 Author Super User Posted November 30, 2013 Thanks Brian. I have a lite hook set more of a swing like when fishing cranks. I suppose if it ends up being too heavy I'm sure I can work a deal on a 744 or 734. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted November 30, 2013 Super User Posted November 30, 2013 Anyone using a glass rod from Dobyns? I was considering 705cbmf glass for square bills. I'm not opposed to graphite though. I tend to have a hard hookset so glass is in my favor. I use glass for deeper cranking. You can pm me, I don't want to jack this thread but its collected the Dobyns fan base. Quote
