Which Shaky Head For My Setup?

Trying to find the right shaky head(s) for my setup. I have a Fenwick ET Smallmouth 6'9" M/XF spinning rod with a Pflueger Supreme MGX size 30. Will be spooled with 8lb Tatsu.

I was pretty set on the Siebert Zenith shaky head but I watched Gene's video and he mentioned that these have heavier wire hooks that would be better suited for a bit heavier setup. It seems like it may be too much hook for the rod and line I am using.

What would you guys recommend? I was looking to get some in 1/8oz and 3/16oz. I did notice that Siebert also has the ball head versions which looked like they'd work. How heavy are the hooks on these?

Finally, do you guys stick with black colored jig heads? I was thinking about getting some in black and some in green pumpkin.

The Sieberts regular ball head jig with the screw keeper hook should be fine for your setup.  The hooks are excellent imo.  I'd even venture to say the zenith's would be fine as well.

I only have experience with one brand and thats megastrike. I cant get the head to lay over when a platic is attached. Stands up everytime.

I normally use spot remover but the are a little pricey i think. Ive had some good luck war eagle shakey head as well and its usually found at a better price, I picked up a package of strikeking shakey heads and really like them to. I dont think you can go wrong with anyones shakey head i guess its more of a personal pref but any of those three should work well for ya.

• Gamakatsu Alien Head
• Megastrike Shak E2 Jigs

My personal best Smallmouth (5.68 lbs) was on the Gamakatsu Alien Head so naturally I tend to lean towards that one.

Shakey Head's are my absolute favorite setup ever...period. 

 

 

I only use one type these days --- Picasso Shakedown's. They have a tiny flexible spring lock so you can use hand poured worms and larger machine worms too. Since the spring is flexible, you can get a nice flat presentation with the worms. Also has a forward facing 60-degree eye and it seems to have really good action because of it. Also - even on the 1/8oz and 1/16th oz heads, the hooks are SUPER strong. I mean S-T-R-O-N-G. Never had one bend on me even pulling in 5 lb's.

 

I usually stick to the solid black color heads. Every month or so I'll order some reds, greens, and purples, but I usually lose those pretty quickly.

Felix - how do those alien's handle rocky bottoms? Also - how does that "spring lock" work? --- do you just shove the nose of the worm on there?

For rocky bottoms I find these all are about the same.  A lot depends on the angle and the type of stuff you are dragging it through.  There is one other I keep in my arsenal and that is the skip gap jig from Gamakatsu.  It has a 90 degree bend which makes it easier to hop over the bigger stuff IMO.

 

The keeper is one where you shove the worm through and it stays in place.
