Trey Harpel Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 You will need spool pin pliers to get that bearing off the spool.. The sideplate bearing is an easy task.. Don't be fooled by some sellers bearings.. Some are cheap junk.. Stay with the big 4 or5 Boca ZPI Hedgehog VXB biggreenfish SS 1 Quote

Solution 21farms Posted November 28, 2013 Solution Posted November 28, 2013 welcome, john. yes, there are many aftermarket parts available and lots of options in terms of bearing upgrades. you can replace your stock bearings with ceramic hybrid bearings which utilize lighter ceramic balls instead of stainless steel and don't need to be lubed although they will be noisier. you also have your choice between metal shielded and rubber shielded...with the rubber seals (usually orange-colored), it's easy to remove the shield and run them open...this makes it easier to clean and freer operation. the metal-shielded ones are probably a little quieter and resist getting grime in them so there are advantages to both. you will need one 3x10x4 bearing for the sideplate and one 5x11x4 for the spool shaft. you *may* need a special tool to remove/reinstall the retaining pin for the bearing on the spool shaft (i say "may" but i really mean 'will'...i've seen videos of people doing this with a pair of pliers and it makes me cringe thinking of the potential damage they're doing to the spool shaft). i use a pair of boca spool pin pliers but they cost $40 but it is worth it to me because i have so many reels...if you're only going to do one or two, it's probably much more cost-effective to send it in and have a professional do it. good luck. 1 Quote

21farms Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 money is not a issue well, why didn't you say so earlier? that changes everything! in that case, hop over to japantackle * and order a set of hedgehog airs and the pin remover tool! Quote
Trey Harpel Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Shot you a Message Chronic.. You will also want some good oil for the bearings as Boca makes a GREAT oil in the lightning oil.. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 28, 2013 Super User Posted November 28, 2013 If money is not a problem then you can also visit the option of lighter custom spools. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I've seen more than a few spools damaged by attempts at removing those spool pins. The original flat nose plier w/hole in the end was the lesser of evils at one time but they don't press squarely on the pin and can bend them. I'm a Boca dealer and extend a 10% discount to members here. Just dropping bearings into a reel won't get nearly the results of having them installed as part of a deep clean & lube service. Let me know if I can help. Quote

piscicidal Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I invite you to check out our bearings. As a Mechanical Engineer with +20 years experience, I'll put our bearings up against Boca, ZPI, hedgehog, etc... Our bearings are true ABEC7 certified ceramic hybrid bearings designed to my specifications. Robert and I stand behind everything we sell. We have a lifetime warranty on everything. We have sold many hundreds of handles and thousands of bearings with ZERO returns. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted December 4, 2013 Super User Posted December 4, 2013 piscisidal, do you guys have bearings for Daiwa reels yet? Specifically 5X11X4 and 3X8X4 that most Daiwa reels use. I'd like to try some of those that have the plastic cage. Regular ceramic hybrids are way to noisy for my taste. Quote
