papajoe222 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 This question is for all of us that see ourselves as experienced anglers. What one piece of reading material would you recommend to a not so experienced angler? It could be a book, magazine series, state or local publication......any hard copy reading. I'm eliminating on-line forums, etc. Not that there isn't a ton of recommended reading to be found on the web, but I'm looking for something you can pick up and read. My recommendation is: 'Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers' This book was put together by the publishers of Fishing Facts magazine and although the title implies (and there is an abundance of information about) fishing nightcrawlers, this book was one of the first 'comprehensive dissertations on structure fishing.' Buck Perry's focus on structure, when attempting to determine fish location, is very evident in the sections that target that subject and not surprisingly as Carl Malz, Spence Petros and many of the writers for that fine magazine were the authors of the majority of those chapters. If for no other reason than to obtain an understanding of how, why, where and when bass and other gamefish use structure, This book is a 'must read' Oh yea, it's also available in PDF format. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 27, 2013 Super User Posted November 27, 2013 Thanks for the recommendation. While I still think Buck Perry's book is the "Bible," I'm gonna check into that. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 27, 2013 Super User Posted November 27, 2013 All of the In-fisherman strategy books are good. The Charlie Brewer book on Slider Fishing is good. I like the format of Roland Martin's. first book - 101 Bass Catching Secrets (or something like that ). There are 101 anecdotes, each a couple of pages, about some concept in bass fishing. I got a book several years ago for Christmas - Fly Fishing for Sharks - An American Journey - Richard Louv . It is a good read about how & why different people in America fish the way they do. Quote

Super User WRB Posted November 28, 2013 Super User Posted November 28, 2013 Bill Murphy's book "In Pursuit of Fiant Bass" has some insight into bass behavior, on a practical level, that should benefit nearly all bass anglers. Keeping an open mind, not necessarily adopting Bill's fishing techniques, anchoring and live bait fishing, instead excepting his strategy that adult size bass behavior differs from juvenile bass and knowing the prey bass prefer will improve your basing fishing success. Big Fish Rice Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Not a "read" but a "watch". I just received a few titles from Lindner Media and their coverage and knowledge continues to blow me away. Their DVDs are second to none. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 29, 2013 Super User Posted November 29, 2013 I don't know about Homer Circle. His hyper-folksy old geezer act got old for me a long time ago, when he was writing for Outdoor Life - or was it Field & Stream - I forget. Later, when he was writing for Bassmaster, I thought he became a caricature of the folksy old geezer. If he had a message or a perspective, it got blurred to me due to the presentation. I know he was in the outdoor writing biz for a long time, and I respect that, but I never thought any of his comments were especially enlightening. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 29, 2013 Super User Posted November 29, 2013 Gee whiz; old geezer describes me or old school. Although I never heeded much of Homer Circle advice, did enjoy his home spun approach to fishing. Homer Circle was an icon to thie sport of bass fishing and he did enjoy researching bass fishing with some of the top biologist and anglers over a period of decades. Sometimes wisdom gets lost on the younger generations throughout history. There are some good books on bass fishing that are dated; The book of black bass by Henshaw. Lucas on bass by Jason Lucas Think like a bass by Tom Mann Tom Quote

Their DVDs are second to none. If you have a Roku streaming box, you can subscribe to their Roku channel. I did it for one month for around $7.00 a month. For that price you can stream all of their DVDs as many times as you want and other videos and their Angling Edge programs. I would not recommend subscribing until they do their big update though. When I subscribed for one month some of their DVD titles would not play. I emailed and they said they were having problems with their server and in the process of moving things over to a new one where they will have complete control over it. I was a little miffed that I paid $7.00 and could not stream all their DVDs. But I could stream most of the ones I wanted to watch so I was not too unhappy. Actually, for the low price I felt I got my moneys worth even though I could not stream 100% of their DVDs. On their Facebook page they said their update is almost done and will be offering a new introductory price of $2.00 or $3.00 a month for two months or so. Then you will be able to stream ALL of their DVDs and programs. They also plan on streaming live talks they give to groups and I think question and answer videos. As soon as they get the update done I'm definitely subscribing for a month or two. I assume it will be like it was - you can cancel any time. Quote

Their DVDs are second to none. I picked up some In-Fisherman DVDs a month ago at Gander Mountain. Online a store wanted from $9.00 to $14.00 for each. I was happy to find all the ones I wanted on bass from $5 to $10.00. I ended up buying four of them and felt like I walked out with a gold mine! lol. Check out the video sections of your favorite brick and mortar outdoors store. You just might find some good DVDs at a nice price. Also, I just received Lurkers Love Night crawlers. It has a lot of good chapters on the basics of fishing. After reading so many good things about Bill Murphy's book I ordered it tonight. Quote

KyakR Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Wow! Thanks Great reading list for me! I too go for old fishing mags. Favorites are Keith Jones "Knowing Bass" and "In Pursuit of Giant Bass" by Bill Murphy. Wish I had a bass boat..... Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I also have The Bass Angler's Almanac - More Than 750 Tips & Tactics by John Weiss. I like it a lot. Quote
Jolly Green Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I've read a couple of books by A.D. Livingston, all of them good. His book on luremaking made me aware of how many variables have to come together harmoniously to make a good bait, and will make you look at commercially produced tackle with a more critical and educated eye. I just finished "Bass On the Fly" and I now have a serious jones to try and learn how to use one of those noodle rods next year! All of his books on actually fishing (as opposed to his numerous books on cooking fish and game) were written between the 70's and the 90's but there's still plenty of good stuff in them, you just lightly skip over the sections about boron rods and the like. Super User A-Jay Posted December 1, 2013 Super User Posted December 1, 2013 And for those who are perhaps looking to add some of the great titles listed here, Amazon.com is an very convenient and inexpensive resource. Not all but several very good reads are available "Used" for as little as one penny - that's $00.01 dollars and at least half the time that's with free shipping. My wife & I both utilize this and would encourage members not to shy away from this because of the "Used" designation. Amazon used book are all we buy anymore and every one has either met and often times exceeded the provided description. In fact, there have been several Autographed collector's editions received that were sold for 1 cent & free shipping. Give it a try. A-Jay 1 Quote
