Chevydriver2123 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I started getting into bass fishing this year after not fishing since a kid. I also bought my first baitcaster in the summer a shimano caenan. I didn't really know to much about rods at the time I just picked one off the shelve. It's also a shimano for worm and jigs. I still don't know much about what rod I need. My wife is buy me the Shimano Chronarch 150 CI4 for xmas. But my question is I will need another rod for my new reel. But I don't know what I should get I don't want to spend more then 145.00 I am a shore fisherman. And I will mainly be fishing spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, swim baits. Any suggestions would be great happy fishing everyone Quote
Arv Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Assuming you're not talking about big swim baits, I'd suggest a 6'6 to 7' m/f or mh/f rod. I'd hold out for a deal at the black Friday sales that are about happen. Personally, I'd look at a Powell max, duckett magic or fenwick smallmouth elite tech. I don't have first hand experience with the duckett or the fenwick but my powell max 683 is one of my favorite rods. Quote
ZB85 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I have a couple Veritas rods and I think they are good rods for a good price. Powell makes good rods too. You might also wanna check out the denali koverts. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 27, 2013 Super User Posted November 27, 2013 Check out the Bass Pro Shops Carbonlites. It's a sweetheart rod that is VERY reasonably priced. I found that out by accident and was amazed by it's sensitivity. I would suggest a 6 1/2' to 7' M/F to begin with. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 27, 2013 Super User Posted November 27, 2013 Match the bait size and reel's line test with that of the your rod for maximum performance. You can find the rod's specs stamped on it above or below the reel seat. As state above, a 6'6" or 7' medium heavy rod is your all around best selection. You can you always select a rod designed for a specific bait or presentation, too. Bass Pro Shops Extremes and Carbonlites are excellent selections as they are priced fairly and perform well. They will probably be on sale this Friday between 5 and 11 AM. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 27, 2013 Super User Posted November 27, 2013 Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'10" MH-MF is $99.95 at fishusa. Lure weight 3/8-1 oz. If lure range on this rod is too high, then the 6'10" MF, 1/8-5/8 oz. If you need a rod for 1/4-1 oz, then look for a MHF such as the Daiwa Jupiter at WalMart. Many MH rods are listed as 1/4-3/4 oz. I haven't fished bottom baits with my Jupiter, so don't know how sensitive it is, but it works great for what I have been using it for...mostly spinnerbaits and 10" unweighted worms. Quote
michael68w Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 As far as brands go all the rods mentioned above are a great choice IMO. I think a good all purpose rod would be 7ft MH power and a fast action. Keep in mind there isnt really an industry standard on power ratings so they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and the same can be said for the action. Quote

With that being said if your only getting one rod to cover those applications I would suggest a couple of rods for you to look at. The first rod is the 6'10" Fenwick Elite Tech smallmouth rod. It is a meadum heavy with a modurate fast action tip. The second rod I would recommend is the 7' medium heavy fast action Abu Garcia Veritas rod. Both rods are well balanced, very light weight and extremely sensitive. Quote
ColdSVT Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 In that price range I would check out the following: *** *** black St croix premier Fenwick Elite tech Lews tournament SL Bps carbonlite For a few bucks more you could be lookin at a St croix avid or a dobyns savvy Quote
