Super User AK-Jax86 Posted November 25, 2013 Super User Posted November 25, 2013 I am looking for a good ultra light combo that will hold up here in FL in case I hook into a big bass (I know they are usually for bluegill and crappie but I want something that can handle a nice sized bass). I've used one before in NJ and it makes fighting the fish fun. I've seen a few combos at my local stores but wasn't sure if they were any good because they were pretty cheap. Any suggestions on a ultra light reel, rod, or combo would be appreciated thanks EDITED: I would want to pend around $150 but anything cheaper would be great, I'd be pretty upset if I broke it on a big bass (going to purchase a warranty jut in case) Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted November 25, 2013 Author Super User Posted November 25, 2013 Price point? Basically anything that will hold up in case I get a big girl. I've seen them at my stores for $40 so I think they aren't reliable but who know. I would spend around $150 but if I can get something good and reliable for much cheaper I am always open to saving money. I plan on getting it Black Friday and I am already spending a nice chunk of change on a go pro. Thank for the suggestions I'd even buy one from someone on the site if it is in good condition I will make a post in the flea market when I figure out what I am looking for because I am clueless right now. Super User tomustang Posted November 25, 2013 Super User Posted November 25, 2013 I used a cherrywood/abu combo that's around 5' fast action UL that held it's own with 14in trout, haven't tried any bass with it. I use all croix UL's and have no problem with bringing in fish in the 4lb range. I prefer 7' for a better fight. Reels in the 100/1000 size with 4-6lb line should be fine, the use of the drag is important. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 25, 2013 Super User Posted November 25, 2013 Fenwick makes a 6'9" ML Fast 4-10, 1/16-5/8 in their Smallmouth series that should work well. Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 26, 2013 Super User Posted November 26, 2013 I've always fished ultralight with a rod rated UL, a small reel and 4# mono. If your line is unfrayed, your knot is sound and drag set properly you'll have no problem with a bigger fish. A bigger potential problem than the size of the fish is the cover. If the cover can't handle the light line, you'll break off and have a fish swimming around with a lure in its mouth. Quote

Water is crystal clear and I see a bunch of big bass swimming around with smaller ones and tons of bluegill and bait fish Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted November 26, 2013 Super User Posted November 26, 2013 Ultra light isn't about fish size.its about heavy cover or not.all too often I hear ppl say or laugh at light line.its about cover not fish size .btw ultra light is way fun.if it wasn't for wood, rocks, weeds.all we would need is UL Quote
I.rar Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Fenwick river runner light/fast from Overstock.com and a pflueger president from ffo tackle. I tried to like ultralight tackle but find a solid light spinning rod to be so much more versatile. Ymmv. Those fenwicks come with a lifetime warranty. I've landed some chunky peas and largemouth in light cover on the rod and it handled them like a champ. Quote
georgeyew Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 What about a Ugly Stik UL rod? You won't be able to break that thing no matter how hard you try. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 26, 2013 Super User Posted November 26, 2013 You can go online and look at Bill Seimantel Vedio on Spro float n fly. Bass you do need longer rods to take up the impact of harder runs near the boat. If the cover is heavy like it is in most of Florida, a 1 or 2 power med/light is more appropriate for bass. Quality is quality, size doesn't matter; $75 rod and $75 reel would be lower of the moderate rods & reels. Shimano Sedona FC1000 reel is about $70, they make decent spinning rods in the &70 range, light action, 6'6"- CSS66LB Claris that would be good with 4 lb mono or FC line. Tom Quote

Super User AK-Jax86 Posted November 26, 2013 Author Super User Posted November 26, 2013 Okuma Celilo in 6'6"UL for the rod http://www.fishusa.com/product/Okuma-Celilo-Spinning-Rods?source=googleps&gclid=CPyixaefgbsCFYl9OgodK2gAdg and the Pflueger trion (cheaper route) http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Pflueger-Trion-Spinning-Reels or the Shimano Sahara 500FE (more expensive route, but nicer) http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Shimano-Sahara-Spinning-Reels The celilo is priced at around $25, the Trion at around $25, and the Sahara at around $70. Thanks for the links I may go this route saving money is always good. I had the pflueger president reel til it broke on a 24" bass (but my reel was beat up so it was more so that than the fish) and now I have the Patriarch... I am a big fan of pflueger Quote
Super User tomustang Posted November 26, 2013 Super User Posted November 26, 2013 how much would that cost me? The cherrywood combo was $40 at DSG, thy were bein clearances out last time I've been in a couple stores The premiers runs around $100 but they can handle almost everything, I still use the 5' with a cheap sienna reel. Croix make them in 6' and 6'6 one piece as well, though I never had a problem with my 2 piece 7' avid Quote
DaveT63 Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I would consider a St Croix Premier 6' UL for a rod. You can probably pick up another President or Shimano Sedona for around $50 on black Friday. If you check the big online fishing tackle retailers on Black Friday, you may even be able to bump up to a St Croix Avid and Shimano Sahara for about $150, and that combo will last you as long as you will want to fish it. And I know from personal experience that rod can handle bass over 6lb. 1 Quote
DelcoSol Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 I have a St Croix Premier 5' with a Pflueger President and love it. The rod feels great and the reel is so smooth. Cost me around $150 at full price. I'm sure it could be had cheaper. I got a 20" Pickerel on a Gulp alive minnow and 1/16oz jig head with 4lb mono. Lots of fun. PS: GO EAGLES! 1 Quote
DaveT63 Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 AK-Jax86, sent you a PM on a GREAT deal (not mine) on a Avid UL. Dave Quote

I am a big fan of pflueger "Okuma Celilo Graphite Lightweight Ultra Light Trout Rod" VS. "Bass Pro Shops Micro Lite Glass Spinning Rod" ???? These rods cost just about the same. Which one do you guys recommend for trout and small pond bass? The Okuma is graphite. The BPS rod is fiberglass. Quote
HeavyTwenty Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I had a glass ultralight and hated it (too whippy). I'd go with the graphite. Quote
HookRz Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Not quite ultra light, but the St. Croix Avid 6'6" light spinning is a classic. Super light tip, enough backbone, and no noodley wobble after the cast. Super versatile I use it for every thing from Bluegill to uber-finesse bass. I can throw 1/32 with ease on 5# braid. Better yet get a custom build on this blank with K style semi-micros and a Tennessee handle. That should take some weight off either end and maintain balance. It's in my plans. Should be sweet. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 18, 2017 Super User Posted May 18, 2017 For about $100.00 and some change, you can pick up a B n' M SHSS (Sam Heaton's Super Sensitive) 7' and a Pflueger #6920 Spinning reel. I have two of these combos and have caught a ton of crappie on them. The rod is more than able to handle larger fish as well. Quote
