Which Camera For My Boat

I am thinking about getting a go pro style camera to mount on my boat for video/pics.

I just don't take enough pics while fishing and was thinking about getting one of the go pro cameras.

I am reading about them but have a few questions for first hand users. I would like to record continuous or close to it for 6-8 hrs. Is that asking too much? Basically I just want it filming all the time and then just review and cut pics of fish out of it.

Any other ideas or input?

Before you commit to the Go Pro,  you may want to check out the Drift HD Ghost.

 

I will tell you that I do not own one, however the list of standard features, the price and the majority of the reviews (from go pro owners) are quite favorable.

GoPro user chiming in.  Recording at 720p you will be able to record about 2 hours at a time with one full battery. They have battery pac extensions you can add as well. You also need a class 10 MicroSD card.  That is important to know and with a 64GB card you can get roughly 6.5 hours worth of footage. Now, you can record at higher settings but it will take more memory so keep that in mind.  Also, if you plan on recording in higher resolutions, be sure your PC can handle the footage efficiently or it's a PITA to edit footage.  That's my dilemma, I need a better PC.

 

It's an awesome little camera and I have no regrets getting one.  Its got a lot of power for such a tiny little thing. You can record up to 4K cinema quality! For some it's overkill, for others it's like a whole other hobby.  As soon as I get a beast of a machine I'll probably use mine 10x more.

 

If you go with GoPro, get about 4 batteries or more depending on how much filming you actaully do. Don't leave your batteries in the camera while not using it, they slowly drain. I'm using the industrial suction cup mount on my boat and it works great. Tether it yourself with rope or the tethers from gopro. In the hot sun, the suction cup has slid/come undone before. Just a forwarning.

Gopro Hero3 Silver user here.  I don't record continuous very often when fishing but use a 5 minute loop instead.  Just stop and start a new loop every time I catch a fish or something is on video I want to save.  As far as battery life 2 hours is about it but I always keep my camera plugged into the boats 12 volt system via cigarette lighter plug and can record as long as I want without having to worry about swapping batteries.  2 of my boats have cigarette plugs and my other boat I have a MK battery box that has 2 plugs in the top of it.  GoPro is really the way to go.  When you consider half the stuff you see on TV now is recorded with GOPro cameras that should tell you something about the video guality.

Does the gopro3 series have the feature of the drift ghost........the continuous recording loop that records for 5 minutes that starts to record over itself unless you press a button that causes the camera to store the last 5 minutes and then starts a new 5 minute loop?

I could not find it on the go pro website. That feature is what will win me over to the ghost.

GoPro will automatically segment your clips in 25-30min segments if you continously record. As mementioned already its good to stop and start after catch n release so you know the end of the clips are most of the catches.

WRONG!!!!!  Read my post above.  That is what I use almost exclusively.  It is in the camera menu and you have the option to set that loop to whatever length you want.   When you catch a fish or whatever, hit the stop button and it saves that loop.  Hit the button again to start another new loop.

Another option which I am working on is get a skeleton case for the GoPro and plug it into a 12v outlet so it stays powered the whole fishing trip. No need to replace batteries. Only down side is that it then is no longer 100% waterproof with that housing on it. But will do just fine in the rain.

just a FYI if you didn't know, that 16GB isn't going to cut it though...need a 64GB for a day on the water...32GB gets you a half day, 4'ish hours roughly...

Yep, I bought a 64 on sale for $39 and an extra battery. The 16 came with the combo pack.
