Best Line For Jerkbaits

Hey I am looking at getting a jerkbait specific rod and reel and was wondering what kind of line and what pound would be best for jerkbaits??? Thanks for any reply. I really appreciate it!!

I would specifically recommend

#12 Sunline SuperNatural.

I've used mono for years, but changed to Yo Zuri Hybrid and like it.

Don't know if i'll keep it on but so far so good.

I asked the same question here about 2 months ago and was given several recommendations for Sunline Super Natural Mono in 12#. So far I am pleased. I am using a MF rod for my jerkbaits and the extra stretch does help when the fish takes a run at the boat. I havent lost one yet.

 

I am going to give it a couple of months and then try a fluoro like Invix that has some stretch

I like braid with a fluorocarbon leader. I don't care what the "pros" like. I catch plenty of jerkbait fish doing it my way.

you'll probably get a lot of mixed opinions but 10# fluoro or 10#  mono is a solid choice. sunlines mono has a smaller diamater so 12# would be roughly the same.

I use 6# Yozuri Hybrid (breaking strength well beyond that). I haven't had any problems, but I would be interested in checking out the Sunline mono next time I respool to see how it compares.

I'm  not sure why there is a preference for lines that stretch when jerkbait fishing. I want to be sure that all the jerking and twitching I am doing with my rod is transmitted to my bait without being absorbed by the line stretching. So I only use superlines, in the 8 to 10 pound strength.

My thoughts exactly. I have a spot on my home lake that, in the spring, the bass congregate in there so thick you can walk across them. It only lasts a couple of weeks, maybe 3, but we catch the bejeeses outta them. We have 40-45 fish mornings (each mind you) in 4-4.5 hrs...all on jerks. It's the hottest bite of the year.

This topic is common. I too ask recommendations for a jerkbait rod. What was recommended to me is: a rod in the 6' to 7' medium or med/heavy power and fast action. Length is a personal preference. Some like a shorter rod so when they work the rod in a downward position it didn't slap the boat and/or water. Some like longer rods. I was watching youtube and rick clunn said he uses different lines for different situations. For example light line (10 lb) for more depth and heavier line for shallow depth. Then he started talking about tuning with hooks and split rings. That's another story. I've read people saying gear ratio doesn't matter cause all you're doing is picking up slack line. Then I read an article about kvd and jerkbaits. He said he likes a fast gear ratio cause if the fish takes the lure he can reel in the slack line quickly and set the hook.

What I've gather up.... it's all preference. People go through a trail and error process to find what they like.

Okay I may cause some responses here, but let me suggest looking at this objectively instead of through opinion.

Most suspending jerk baits suspend head down. Floating jerk baits rise when stopped. The bait action you create when you jerk the bait is having the bait dark and dig into the water downward with the lip of the bait dictating the amount of downward movement.

So, if this is the case, to maximize the action of the bait, you want the line lower than the bait itself. A fluro line sense it sinks would be better than mono in this instance.

I like 10 or 20 lb Braid & a good old Monofilament Leader.

I'm a braid user with only 1 exception, baits that constantly rotate 360 degrees, I can then troll out my line using mono or copoly which I do after each outing.  10# braid with 2' of shock leader works just fine for me, the braid is plenty strong, hook sets require less effort and I like the way I can work my lures.

I am in the light braid with mono leader camp for jerkbaits and it works for me.

Don't throw hard jerk baits a lot, typically just a few times in spring. However I throw t rigged flukes a lot. I use fluoro if I'm trying to get any depth. If it's peak summer I may use mono over weed beds.
