Lew's American Hero Rod

Anyone have any info on the quality of this rod?  I'm working on putting together a pitching/punching set for my dad for christmas so I need to keep the price of the combo fairly low.

 

My dad is a veteran and I think he would appreciate the rod and it's american flag logo.  I'd like to get red white and blue reel grips for the lews speed spool I will pair with it.

 

Or do you think I should spend the extra 10 bucks for the Laser SL speed stick (dad's favorite color is bright red...) which seems to be slightly better quality?

 

Opinions appreciated (especially from dads/vets)

I'd like to keep the combo under 150 for rod reel.

 

Still gotta tack on line, terminal tackle, reel grips etc...
