MacP Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Anyone else feel they are underrated? Out of all the baits I've thrown with regularity, I get the biggest fish consistantly on a chatterbait (maybe swim jigs tie). Rippin' it and let it fall or a slow to moderate speed retreive works best for me. I'll admit, they don't work all the time - but, I think they should probably be thrown more. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 18, 2013 Super User Posted November 18, 2013 They wear me out fishing them. Same with spinnerbaits. I've caught my share of fish on them, but anymore I'd rather fish a jig or a jerkbait. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 they are good little baits, but for me they catch bass in the 1-2 lb range, except in dirty water then they do a little better for me, but spinners and swim-baits do better for me. Mitch Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 18, 2013 Global Moderator Posted November 18, 2013 Black and blue home made chatterbait is one of my go to big fish baits. 1 Quote
5fishlimit Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 A lot of people fish them, or else you wouldn't see offerings from several manufacturers. Quote
s freud Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 This thread used to be longer, but I will repost. How do you tie these things on? I don't know which side even with that funky loop... Also I guess you fish it more like a jig instead of a spinnerbait. Quote
MacP Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 Yeah, what happened to this thread? It was much longer. Quote

I fish them like a spinnerbait/swim jig and sometimes I'll rip them off the bottom a few feet and let them drop. 1 Quote
s freud Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Thanks. Also, it was posted in the general forum that they lost a days worth of posts because of technical stuff. Quote
MacP Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 I fish all my chatterbaits with a different trailer. Usually with a subwoofer (swim jig favorite too) or a Trigger X flappin' grub. I took advantage of a certain online retailers black friday sale and bought some of the Frenzy Vibe chatterbaits that have a swiveling 4/0 hook. I've not fished them yet, but I suspect they will have better action than any other blade baits I've tried. Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Black and blue home made chatterbait is one of my go to big fish baits. Not to mention those giant cats you catch on them out there Quote
Super User tomustang Posted November 21, 2013 Super User Posted November 21, 2013 They don't produce well enough for me to use them more.. Quote
CDobber Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Just bought my first one (black and blue skirt) a few weeks ago even though I had it on my 'wish list' all season. Have thrown it a few times but no success yet, though everything I've thrown since the end of July had the same result (until recently breaking my 3 month skunk). I haven't tried it with any trailers yet, will save that for the spring. Quote
s freud Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Now that I know how to tie it on, I really like the action. The fish did not today, but that's how it goes some days. Also tried out my new buzzbaits without success. Still fun though. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted November 22, 2013 Super User Posted November 22, 2013 I have caught plenty of fish on both the Original Chatterbait, and the Pure Poison. I have always used trailers on both, and it's always been a Baby Craw or Craw. The new Rage Blade, is an improvement to both. It deflects off stuff like lay downs and such, like a shallow-running squarebill (much better than the other two), with all the action! Once people get to try out this one, it'll be the new favorite in the bunch. There are times, where that action cannot be beat, and I plan on keeping it in my bag of tricks forever. Quote

craww Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Secret weapon lures or strike king bluegill skirt and a twin tail gybc hula grub doctored up with a blue spike it pen. The added weight of the yammo plastic allows you to cast it a bit better/more accurately. Personally I've found the way a twin tail undulates and "ripples" is better than a rage craw style design or the like on a chatterbait. Quote

How do you fish them? Like someone stated earlier I have a list of baits that I keep in my phone and put that on there a while ago. Last weekend I was at Academy with my girlfriend and she picked one up and said this looks cool what is it. So I saw thatas a sign and bought it, funny I read a post someone made the day before and they posted some pics of fish he caught on chatter baits. Was just curious how to fish them. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted November 24, 2013 Super User Posted November 24, 2013 Mostly swimming like a spinnerbait, but I also don't hesitate to just kill that sucker next to good looking targets. Probably split between fish caught on it while swimming, and working like a jig on bottom. I might have to admit, that because I use a Rage Tail on the back, that's why it gets so much love on the bottom. Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I have had some pretty good luck with the original chatterbait. Biggest largemouth I have caught on one is a 5-13. Biggest smallmouth a 4-2. I fish them when conditions are good for spinnerbait fishing. Pro fisherman use them quite a bit as well. They call it a bladed jig though and not a chatterbait. One thing I have noticed about fishing a chatterbait. For example If you catch 5 bass along a shoreline and then turn around fishing that shoreline again then maybe you get one or two if you fish the spinnerbait. If you were to go back down along that shoreline with the chatterbait for the second pass you will catch more fish then you would if younhad fished the spinnerbait. That is when I have found I have the best luck with a chatterbait. I think that it gives off a way different vibration then a spinnerbait and when fished behind one it will pick up fish that have already seen the spinnerbait. Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-3260 Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 At first o had to luck throwing them to the bank. But started fishing it slow near points and they seem to work better than a standard spinnerbait of the same color. Quote
Nick49 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 The chatterbait application has all but replaced the spinnerbait for me. Quote
