I had the 35 size on my shakyhead rod and loved it. The reel is so light and I found the larger reel easier to handle and not cumbersome at all like some larger reels I've used.

It will work fine as long as the size doesn't bother you.  I have a 35-size Pflueger spinning reel w/10lb YZ line on a 7'6" m-xf rod and it works fine for that application. However, I also have three "30" size reels on other rods and the "30" is my standard size for bass.  IMO, you go to the  "35" size for balance reasons, to run heavier mono/flouro/co-poly line, for the line capacity, or perhaps for the bigger drag surface in the spool; otherwise, it's probably more reel than you need for bass or other similar fresh-water fish.  The "30" is lighter, has plenty of line capacity for mono or braid, and has enough drag. Actually, my most-used Pflueger (over 2,200 fish so far) is a "25" size that I have on my grub rod (7'1" m-xf)...but in this case it's just a bit small for that application.  I think many folks find that the "30" size is the sweet spot for bass use.

My 35 was used for nearly 2 years catching snook and other inshore species.  The last few years it's been on a 7' med 8/17 rod for canal bass, reel performs as new with just a drop of oil twice a year.  I have the 30 size on 6'6 ml performs well for pond fishing, both reels have been winners.

i used the size 30 patriarch last year for a short time for walleye and smallies. the 30 was a great size . i felt the 35 was just too big. i used 6# braid and 7# fluoro on the reel /w no issues. i really like 1000 size or 30 size reels for walleye though. i like 2500 for large mouth.

I personally figure 30# braid is way too heavy on a Med. rod.  I have it on a MH only because several people on here that I trust suggested it at the time I was ready to spool the reel for this rod.  I may drop down to 20# next time it needs re-spooling...which won't be for a long time given that I seldom use it even tho it is my nicest rod.  My love affair with b/c reels hasn't cooled yet.  :teeth3:

I don't have any Dobyns rods.  At first the Savvy was highly recommended as a great rod in its price range.  After its newness wore off, I begain to read posts stating it wasn't really a good rod for bottom baits.  Many felt it wasn't as sensitive as first reported.  Balance on Dobyns has always been reported as excellent.  (At least for the b/c rods.)  I will stick to other brands in this price range, but if I ever decide to spend more for a rod, the Champion line would definitely be on my list.

Braid handles quite well on a spinning reel.  You may want to try some 15# before giving up on braid.  My spinning reels are 3-braid, 3-mono.  Baitcast reels carry mono by a wide margin.

I don't think 30# braid will have any negative affect on a medium spinning rod, personally I use 15# braid as my max for bass fishing.

I have a Supreme XT size 30 and use it on a Veritas 6'9" ML. It is a perfect match for the rod.

This year I loaded the XT with 6# Trilene and used it primarily for tubes, small grubs and small cranks (1/4 oz or less).

However, I have been considering trying light braid for the same purpose. Your thoughts regarding both line test and using braid for tubes, small grubs and small cranks?

I always use 20# braid on a 7' M Veritas with a Stradic 2500 for Senkos and all other weightless or lightly weighted soft plastic. Absolutely love that setup, but I am sure that the 20# would be too heavy for the first setup I mentioned. .
