Texas bassman Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 i seen the black friday add from bass pro this yr. seems they changed the reel up a bit. picked up the pq combo and a cheap bass pro rod as a combo last yr for $75 this yr i think they want 70 for a better rod and updated pq. seems like a good deal. hope they made it lighter. have yall heard anything on this? it be nice if they updated the johnny sig series reel too. Hrm, wonder why I didn't get a flyer yet. I usually get it too by now. Are you sure it's a PQ? I think I bought the same exact combo your talking about last year. It threw me off a little too, I was stoked. Until I compared the reel side by side with my other PQ. I noticed the subtle differences and realized this one was made in China the other in Korea, there are other minor differences, but overall it is a PQ but with cheaper components. It was called a PQ Tournament Combo. Don't get me wrong still a decent reel for the price, the rod though was really really cheap. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted November 15, 2013 Super User Posted November 15, 2013 X2, don't expect the PQ to be the one most everyone agrees is a great reel for the money Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 15, 2013 Super User Posted November 15, 2013 Many times for sales they build an item that looks the same but isn't as high of quality as the normal version. If you want to see where it happens the most, take a look at the black friday TV deals that will be coming out. Specs will not be the same as a normal TV, especially with the number of inputs and outputs available. Quote
Texas bassman Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 d**n That's good to know. I have buddies that work at bass pro so il get a for sure from them. I traded my reel In for a different gear ratio so I guess I got a different or regular quality pq. Lol Quote

Lol With bass pro, they typically call it a limited, or tournament, and in this case a silver edition pro qualifier. That's your first clue that it isn't the same reel. Just read the specs Quote
cbass12 Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I asked for this combo last year for xmas after I saw it on black friday. Wife got it for me and after about a week I took it back and spent a little extra money on the PQ/Carbonlite combo. The reel was not at all smooth like the other PQ's I have, and the rod just felt cheap. I was happy in the end but I would not buy this combo again. Quote
The Rooster Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I saw something similar in the Bionic Plus combo. Reels out of the box were smooth. Rod combo reels all felt tight, no matter the settings. I could literally feel the difference in hand while at the store. For this reason, I never buy combo rods UNLESS I am totally satisfied with the rod and reel at the time of purchase with my own examination. I would never blindly purchase the combo and assume the reel is the same as the ones sold separately. I don't even care if they have the exact same names and markings, not just special editions or tournament versions, you'll never convince me the rod combo reels aren't cheaper made versions in disguise.
