Jack Fate Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I'm not so much interested in the lures as I am the places to fish. Based on what I see from satellite imagery is that the lake is muddy for a few miles below the dam. I'm sorely tempted to run west for about five miles before I attempt to wet a hook. Any comments? I haven't been on Wilson lately..been on Pickwick. Water should not be muddy at all though.
Brian Needham Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I haven't been on Wilson lately..been on Pickwick. Water should not be muddy at all though. Jake what is it like on Wilson below wheeler dam?..... is it safe to run, move about? You always hear on Pickwick below Wilson dan to be really careful as lower units and hulls are not safe. just asking because rock and fiberglass don't mix!
Mr. Swabby(aka westtennessee1) Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 My son Nate and I are getting psyched for the Road Trip... I attached a couple of photos of some big brownies to get your heart a pumpin' . First from Wilson Lake in late April 2012 and the second from May 2010 in the tail water of the Wilson Dam. 3

This would be handy info to have now......I'm telling you. I have not heard that about pickwick........I appreciate that now.
Brian Needham Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 This would be handy info to have now......I'm telling you. I have not heard that about pickwick........I appreciate that now. I live by the rule (even still on pickwick) if I haven't been to the area of the lake stay inside of the buoys. I know past 7 mile island on that end of the lake you better know where you are going or stay in the between the buoys. it REEEEAAAAAALLLLLYYYYY be helpful to know if Wilson is the same way...... I figure it is say from the powerlines east to wheeler dam...... this is just my guess viewing navionics map
BG RTR Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Power lines east is shallow and rocky. U can go in there just idle along and watch for the rocks! I was on Wilson last week and water is fairly clear (4 ft or so). Feel free to pm me any specific questions. Thx.
BG RTR Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Should also add that u need to be careful headed to and from the main Chanel back into doublehead. There are some shallow and stumpy areas.
Brian Needham Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 thanks BG RTR..... I figured, but since there is 3 ramps right there at the dam (south side) I figure if the current isn't too bad a guy might be able to idle out of the ramp then drop trolling motor. Little bit easier to see rocks while on the trolling motor than sitting at the console..... don't ask me how I know
Super User Long Mike Posted April 21, 2014 Super User Posted April 21, 2014 Should also add that u need to be careful headed to and from the main Chanel back into doublehead. There are some shallow and stumpy areas. Now THAT is some good information to know! Is the channel marked back into Doublehead?
macmichael Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Someone said to bring long extension cords as the outlets are quite a ways off. Anyone know about this?
Brian Needham Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Mike, according to navioincs it is.... the web app shows the buoys so the map card will too.(heading into double head) but the channel looks to be a few hundred yards from the ramp at doublehead Another question: If you put in the at the 3 ramps at the south bank at the dam just west of the powerlines there are no buoys defining any channel until you get to the north bank.......is one to assume it is safe running across to the north bank?

Super User Long Mike Posted April 21, 2014 Super User Posted April 21, 2014 I'll have about 200' of cord with me, in various lengths.
bassin is addicting Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Smallmouth should be on fire on the gravel banks across from Indian Creek. And behind the islands from Dry creek to the old boat ramp toward Al line. This time of year its unreal how many good browns come off those gravel points. Plus there covered with spawning benches that have been added over the years. Pete after reading this...i am worthless at work today... lol... i hope we can run into some of those browns...this week can't go by fast enough.. i can't wait 1

I wouldn't run wide open from the ramps to the North bank. It is deeper that a little closer to the dam, but I would still be cautious. If you head due North from the ramp, then you will go into the mouth of Bluewater creek. Be really careful on the east side of the mouth as there is a submerged lock, power lines, etc. Its a bad area to be in. If you fish the mouth of Bluewater, then I recommend heading in from the west side. 1

soopd Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Was on Wilson 3 days the past week. Water temp was 63 on main lake Friday and yesterday it was 69. The water was not muddy but it was stained up more than normal. I never left the main river that much so I do not know what the temps are in the creeks. I caught some fish that was prespawn and I caught some that already spawned out. All phases should still be going on. There are only a few places that are dangerous to run. Be careful around Hog Island, mouth of Bluewater creek, inside Town creek, and between the towers and the North bank below Wheeler dam. Probably a few more that I can not think of right now. Good Luck to you guys..

Brian Needham Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 as we all make final plans and packing the boats, bait and work arrangments I offer these last pieces of advice based on last year's trip. 1. bring your own toliet paper.... resort/hotel paper is not fun after a week 2. set aside a few bucks for the raffle.... it is a good time 3. Think strongly about donating to Tackle the Storm for each fish you catch at the roadtrip..... even if it is only a dime per fish if you catch 50 during the week(and you will) you can donate $5 and put a smile on a child! some will give more and some less, but every penny counts!! 4. take LOTS of pictures! 3
Brian Needham Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 5. non boaters..... bring your life jacket if possible. It sucks at 6am to scramble around to try to find one. Always do, but its peace of mind if you have yours..... To me lifejackets are like Pillows, your own always feels better.
Global Moderator Mike L Posted April 22, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks Brian Matter of fact I'm going this weekend to get a new life jacket. Even if Mrs Mike doesnt get to fish, It's a good excuse to get a new one. Mike
macmichael Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Ya'll are making me very very very anxious. Thank you muchly!!!
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 remember to buy your fishing license. Yeah I need to to that today!!
