I had to replace my wireless router the other day so I ran out to best buy and picked up a netgear n300 wireless router.I know very little about computers but it was simple to replace it and get the new one up and running but I seem to get kicked off line randomly 4-5 times a day. If I unplug modem and then the router and then reboot I get back on line but I was wondering if I got a bad router or is it something else.

How many devices are connected to your router?  Only thing I can think of is you are having IP address conflicts.  If you have a lot, that is a strong possibility.  I have an old router that started doing that for the last 6 months.  If that's the case, you can fix it by setting static IP's.

It could also be your ISP.  Or it could  just be a crap router.  If you are non-tech savvy, my first step would be to return it, I guess.  I've always used linksys, as they are a subsidiary of Cisco, and Cisco knows their stuff in terms of networking.  ISP's generally don't offer help trouble shooting modems as they are 'not supported'.  There's no reason why you should have to reset your modem that much.  Good luck!

You say wireless but you have cables connecting the modem the plugs may be loose or worn so reconnecting them fix issue for a bit . Try wiggling the wires next time you have issue see if it comes back.

I found my phone line connector not fitting correctly once into my wireless router just pushed it in some and connection came back. Went bought new line cause the plug latch was broke..

I've been having a lot of issues with my wireless network.  Had no problems for several years, worked beautifully with my Linsky.  A couple of months ago I start getting kicked off line and constantly need to reboot, call Comcast and they tell me I need to have their new upgraded modem with it's own built in router.  Get my new modem and can't connect a wireless network, servicemen comes out.  The tech tells me the new routers don't work well and connects my old linsky to it, everything is fine for a while.  I was charged $60 for that service call, had it taken off my bill but that seems to be their new policy.  My remote computer is getting knocked off line again and I have to keep hitting " apply this fix", then everything is ok until I close the lid on the laptop, then have to hit the fix next time I want to use it.  Reading on line and talking to Comcast (which does not resolve the problem) the new router overrides my linsky, if I remove the linsky and use just the new router I can't connect at all.

The isp has to be manually reconfigured, just checking where it says to "obtain an ips automatically" isn't working, the dns server address has to be changed as well.  Sound confusing, well it isn't if you are a tech, but even having a bit of knowledge in this area is not serving me well.  Putting in the wrong numbers or making a bad click someplace can wind up being a nightmare, which I have experienced spending 4 hours with linsky live chat and still didn't work.

If you do not know what an ips is or how to change it or where to change it in your computer, or go on line to reconfigure, don't try it.......Get an tech over there or call customer support.

That router sounds familiar. If it what I'm thinking of it's garbage. I had router that constantly kicked me off, so I went and got bigger unit that could run more devices and haven't had a problem since. Some switches are just plain garbage.

I recently upgraded my router to one of the Apple Airport Time capsules.  It isn't cheap but it works as a 2TB back up and the router has been great so far with our iPad, MacBook Air, Dell laptop and a few iPhones.  It allows a lot of connections and you can easily set up guest access as well.

I also haven' noticed any difference in connectivity ore performance between the PC or the Mac, well other than the Mac is brand new lol

About an hour ago I was on Comcast's site and they have a section devoted to wireless gateway problems, the gyst was pretty much reconfiguring the gateway path.

Do your other devices stay connected ie: cell phones , tablets, streaming devices if you have any?

If so maybe you should just use the comcast router being you stated you have used the linksy for several years problem free. No routers last forever a number of tech sites even recommend replacing after a couple of years. I went through similar issues with my last cable company because they only provided new customers with a combo modem/router. I was going  through routers every 2 years or so for many years. The first thing that started happening was the wi-fi signal would weaken and become spotty throughout the house, download speed would also decrease, and devices started losing the connection if they were not close to the router. The same happened whether inexpensive or expensive routers.  My current cable provider supplies the combo modems which seem to only last the same maybe 2 years before I have to replace , it may be because we have a lot of devices connected all the time , (multiple laptops, tablets ,cell phones, tv's ,security cam's ,alarm system, etc.)

You more than likely have a bad New Comcast router ,that sometimes happens , you should not have to do all the techy stuff to get and maintain connection, simple reason is that I think I can safely say that more than 75 % of their customers have no understanding of ,Ip addresses, Mac addresses or how to configure router settings if they can even get into the setup.

Heck many can't even enter the passwords in their own devices. In my opinion I would just turn in that equipment and get another stating you keep having connectivity issues and want another. This way you do not have to wait for a service call and waste a large portion of your day waiting.

If your problem is not already solved I hope this helps.

I think after seven years, he's either fixed the problem or moved on.

Next time you get kicked off, try resetting only the router and see if that fixes it. If you then have to unplug the modem, then you ruled out the router as the problem. You can also try connecting the modem directly to the computer.

My old router was a pretty decent one, but it was older and less powerful, showing its age. I would get kicked off a few times a day, but it wasn't bad enough to justify spending another $150 on a decent router. One day, it got to the point it barely worked at all.
