rboat Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I have heard good & bad about these sure set hooks. Should I keep them on or replace with a quality regular treble hook? Thanx. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 8, 2010 Super User Posted October 8, 2010 I hate them, first of all they are very light gauge wire and bend easy. Secondly, I crank alot of grass and wood and those darn things, contrary to Rapalas marketing claiming other wise, snag and grab any thing they come in conatact with. I have no doubt they are some fish sticking hooks, but in my applications they drive me nuts. I take them off and replace them with Mustad KVD's. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted October 8, 2010 Super User Posted October 8, 2010 they don't make any difference to me. if a bait has two of them though i'll take the front one off and swap it with the rear hook of a crank with regular hooks Quote
bigredxlt Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Its probably just me or the lure, but I have the sure sets on the smaller clackin raps and I havent caught anything and I mean nothing on either of them. I always end up going back an old chrome rattlin rap and catch more with that. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 8, 2010 Super User Posted October 8, 2010 I personally don't like them. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I actually like them. I have just been digging them in sand so no real snag threat. So far so good. Hook up ratio is nice, cant say it is much different than a regular treble, but it beats trying to get my finger nail into a ring to take it off and replace! Quote
njbasstracker Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I like them as well every time the longer hook is always the one sunk in hook ups seem good Quote

I got stuck more than I caught anything with those hooks. I wouldn't recommend them unless you're fishing cover-less waters... Actually, I think I lost more lure with Sure Set hooks than I caught fish Quote
Vinny Chase Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I like to think the sure sets run the best with the stock hooks on. with saying that, i usually switch out all my hooks besides the SS. Until i have a problem i don't find it necessary to switch them out. Quote
shootermcbob Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I fish around alot of rip-rap. The sure-sets hang up miserably. However, they are money for top water baits. I take them off any cranks I buy that may have them, and put them on my topwaters. they seem to be the part of the hook that catches the fish, even the ones who "slap" at the baits. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 8, 2010 Super User Posted October 8, 2010 Not wild about ss hooks but I don't change a hook until it needs changing, then I only use saltwater hooks even for freshwater. Quote

Super User Micro Posted October 9, 2010 Super User Posted October 9, 2010 I actually switched some regular trebles out for sure sets when I was having trouble with hook ups when fishing colder water. It seemed to me that fish were slapping at the bait and I was getting a lot of hooks in the gills and side of the face. Once I went to sure sets, my mouth hook ups went up. Quote
