Harrybass Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Hi guys, I'm only a freshman in highschool and I'm looking for a new rod and reel (baitcaster) for soft plastics. My budget is about 200 dollars and if it's on sale it's better. I've been looking at a abu garcia revo sx paired with a st. Croix mojo bass. (Soft plastics) Any ideas? Quote
Harrybass Posted November 10, 2013 Author Posted November 10, 2013 I fish gary Yamamotos 5" senkos a lot. Quote
Arv Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Wait till Black Friday sales and you'll be able to get some awesome deals. If I remember correctly, sales are usually 20% off. If you're good with mag brakes, personally I'd look at a Lews Speed Spool on a Duckett Magic, Fenwick Smallmouth or Shimano Crucial. Quote
Gaerith Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Bass tackle depot has a 25% off sale on a lot of items right now for veterans day. You could grab a speed spool for 75 and then wait for black Friday sales for the rod. The rods Arv mentioned are all solid choices. Dunno if 13 omens will go on sale at all for black Friday, but they are worth keeping an eye out for too. Quote
Harrybass Posted November 11, 2013 Author Posted November 11, 2013 Well I like lews but for reels I usually prefer abu garcia shimano or pflueger Quote
Arv Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Well I like lews but for reels I usually prefer abu garcia shimano or pflueger Ultimately its up to you. You will be the one fishing with it. I think the SX and Mojo would be fine, but personally I would put more money into the rod. Quote
Mxtaylor Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I have a Revo SX and 6'6 MH Mojo Bass "Jig-n-worm" so pretty similar to what your looking at. I'm not a huge fan of my Mojo rod, wish I would have gone with a Veritas or other rod in the price range. Love the Revo SX though. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 12, 2013 Super User Posted November 12, 2013 I have owned and fished plenty of Mojo's............they are fine rods. BUT if you want to save your self a few bucks and still get a nice rod, look at an Abu Vendetta. They are every bit as good as the Mojo performance wise, lighter and less tip heavy to boot. I sold all my Mojo's once I started using Vendetta's. Besides they look pretty slick paired with a Revo SX, and we all know how bass prefer matching gear..............LOL 2 Quote

Super User BassinLou Posted November 12, 2013 Super User Posted November 12, 2013 Have you thought about or considered the REVO S. Nice reel. I use that reel for my soft plastic presentations. Then use the difference for a nicer rod. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Well I like lews but for reels I usually prefer abu garcia shimano or pflueger Lews = Abu = Pflueger They are all Pure fishing and are all make rehashed versions of eachothers reels. For example, the $199 retail reel in the Abu line up is the STX, which has dual braking, a carbon fiber handle, 11 or so bearings. Lew's tournament pro is the $199 retail reel for Lew's, which has dual braking, a carbon fiber handle, and 11 or so bearings. Seeing a pattern yet? The $199 retail reel in the Pflueger line up is the patriarch, which like the two above, has dual braking, a CF handle, and 11 or so bearings. I personally will not buy lew's or abu or Pflueger because I feel they are cheapy, and the reels from the big 2 companies (daiwa, shimano) are much better. What is the price range you have? Quote
OperationEagle Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 When you pass by a Walmart, drop in to check out the rods they have available. I just bought two more Vendetta 6'6" MH casting rods for $29 and change each (on clearance). $30 for a rod like that is a steal imo. So check them out...as they are still out there! Quote
Hattrick7 Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I can only comment on the reel. You should have no issues throwing a senko on it. The reel is a real workhorse. If you get it on eBay there's no tax and free shipping so you can get another bag or two of senkos. Quote
