hookedahawg Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I love me some BBQ. Ribs, brisket burnt ends, pork chicken anything. Heres my problem, where I live (east tennessee) BBQ is expensive. I realize there is a lot of preparation that goes into bbq, but what makes it so expensive? Is it different in other parts of the country. Heres an example. A place down the street will charge 24.99 for a rack of spare ribs with two small sides. If you want baby back its 29.99 just seems high to me. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 Buy yourself a smoker and make your own. 2 Quote
hookedahawg Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Well yeah I could do that obviously. The post isnt about making it, just wondering what its like in other places. I live in the home of high prices though so I wouldnt be suprised if its a regional thing lol. Quote
CayMar Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 The prices here are maybe $5-$10 cheaper in general. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 My favorite local rib joint: http://goodsmokebbq.com/menus/ribs/ Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I went to texas road house the other day. It was $17 for ribs. I could tell it was only 17. There is a place in Excelsor Springs out by KC is the best bbq ribs I've ever had. Cheap too. full rack is about 15 bucks or was last time I was out that way. Quote
hookedahawg Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Thanks guys, I know you get what you pay for, just seems like around these parts you pay alot and get nothing lol Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 Going rate around here for what they call a full rack which is really about a half rack is 18-20. I can buy 3 full racks at BJ's for around 25-30 tops and smoke them at home and they are way better. I find ribs to be one of the easier cuts of meat to smoke/BBQ and it doesn't take all that long. I have a rack in the fridge right now with the dry rub i just put on waiting for the grill tomorrow Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 Dang yall got me hungry now. My pops or BIL always makes our ribs. Almost as good as some DreamLand ribs. Not quite there, but almost. Cheaper too. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 And you don't have to get a smoker either...i use my trusty Weber 22" grill and have smoked everything from ribs, sausage, brisket, hams to jalapeño poppers. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 I'm from KC so first off our BBQ is the best! Our local joints normally have 1 day a week they sell ribs for around $14/slab some lower some higher but $18-20/slab is the regular price without sides. Please don't argue with me on us having the best BBQ just let us have that, remember we don't have big fish around here and we also have the Chiefs/Royals. GIVE US THE BBQ THING!!! Quote
hookedahawg Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 Lol I dont care who has "the best" its ALL good. Prices seem about the same I guess. We have an annual festival called ribfest and wings. $12.00 gets ya a all you can eat wristband. Thats my favorite day of the year haha. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 In the places I frequent, $24 to $30 for full slab of ribs smoked for hours in a smoker is common. Ribs at restaurants that take short cuts are $18 to $20. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 We have the American Royal BBQ competition. If you wonder around it you'll find places with all you can eat/drink bracelets and live bands. Good times! Quote
Ohio Dave Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 how many other joints are in the area. my guess is that that one is alone in a sea of very boring tgi apple tuesdays why people eat at those places on purpose is beyond me anyway, that is a little high for a full rack dinner imo time and operation costs make it darn hard to make a full rack and sides much cheaper that 16/18 bucks it takes me 6 hours to bbq a rack not counting the time it takes to hunt down good apple wood or how long it took to learn how to do it right Quote

hookedahawg Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 Nope not at all, thats a rack, and two sides that I consider kinda "low level" sides such as potato salad and fries out of a bag. If you want baked beans or baked potato its 1.25 upcharge. Quote
hookedahawg Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 I just see these places in texas or KC that give you these huge portions of food for what id have to sell my house to get lol. Of course they could be making it look alot bigger/better because its on tv. I just think cost should reflect what you get in return. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 This is one of the 2 $13.99 slabs we got yesterday and ate some of tonight! Note NO BBQ sauce and that is a partial slab that is on a 9x13 plate. I'm hungry now and that slabs about to loose a few bones... ;-) 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 Florida being a tourist destination and snowbirds coming down for the season, food is not cheap like it used to be. I do find the rib places to be very reasonable, we go here and the food is excellent. http://www.badtothebonebbq.com/ribs.html In South Florida you can eat 3 meals a day in a different restaurant for a year and never eat in the same one twice, if it isn't good they don't stay in business too long. Super User Oregon Native Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 Good ol weber...some hickory pieces soaked in water and lastly some babybacks from Target (best I've found around Knoxville and good prices) Two hours later finger lickin time. Like to spice em and put a little OJ in some aluminum foil and cook in indirect heat for an hour. Take out of foil and lay in middle between coals and spice again and then 15 min beforre serving top with honey and halapeno jelly. Tight lines 1 Quote

How do you make jalapeno jelly? Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 . How do you make jalapeno jelly? **** in the food processor, sugar and fruit pectin. Simple and effective. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 8, 2013 Super User Posted November 8, 2013 Oh jeez....I abbreviated jalapenos to (jap) and it starred it out. 2 Quote
