joeyfishes Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I really enjoy flipping and pitching jigs and punching rigs, in fact, it's my favorite technique. Right now I have three baitcasters (Abu Vengeance 7' MDM with a Shimano Caenan, Abu Veritas 7' MHM with a Abu Pro Max, and a Falcon HD 7' MHM with a Quantum) I have been looking at some rods and reels for flipping and pitching. My bass club is sponsored by Abu so we can get most products 50% off and Kistler products at a significant discount. I recently got the Veritas and have been more than impressed. I was looking at some rods in the 7'6 Heavy Fast or Extra Fast range and the Revo SX. What are some of y'alls suggestions? Thanks. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 If you can get Abu stuff at 50% off, what's the question? Me, I've got a very simple rule for reels, i.e. if it don't say Shimano on it, I am unlikely to buy it. 1 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 7'4-7'11 is a good length. For rod power it will depend on the type of cover you plan to use it for. In my eyes, go heavier as you can throw around docks and other cover as well as punch through mats. If you go too light, then you're stuck with just throwing to areas that the rod will handle and passing up all the dense sweet spots that hold big bass. Reels, i like high speed. 7.x.1 But it's more about IPT. You want to reel in slack and get the fish out quick. The combination of a high speed reel and a long rod with a great backbone is the key to success. 1 Quote
joeyfishes Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 The Abu Veracity has a 7'6 option that can handle 1/2 oz to 2oz lures with a fast tip. Quote
LMB ANGLER Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 50% off on abus and discounts on Kistler rods? you do realize that those are quality gear. dude go for it. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 I am flipping with 7'6" Abu Vendetta's and like them a lot. Way better balanced and lighter than the Shimano (Clarus) and St Croix (Mojo) flipping sticks I have had. I use the 7'6" MH for moderate cover, and the 7'6" for punching and heavy cover. Both have Revo STX's mounted on them, 30lb braid on the MH, and 50lb braid on the H. At $79 MSRP they are a good "bang for the buck" at the 50% off you say your club has on Abu gear they are a steal. Grantman83 Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Pick yourself up a revo rocket and a kistler klx in the 7'6hf and you will be more than good 1 Quote
joeyfishes Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Kistler's look amazing and I have heard many good reports but they are still a little too expensive even with the discount. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 7'6" rod...let's you flip further...7'11" seems too long for my personal taste. I'd probably go with xf action if you were punching, allows you to set hook harder and pull them out of the slop faster. The fast action may be a little more forgiving though. Also, a 7 to 1 reel is very important. If a bass runs at you after flipping, you need to pick the line up fast to set hook...and it helps to haul the bass out of cover and keep them on top of it. Grantman83 Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 What is your price range? A klx with a 50% discount would be around 100 with shipping and taxes. That's a steal on what everyone says is a quality rod. If you had to go the Abu route, I'd stay clear from the veritas because they are incredibly tip heavy. Combined with a lightweight reel like the stx will wear you out pretty quickly. Maybe bump up into the Villain or veracity? Abit higher quality and offset by your discount Reel wise, something high speed. An stx in the 8.0:1 would be ideal and a cheaper option. Quote
