Rudy1922 Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Fishing has been real tough the last 4 days around here, so out of desperation a bought my first top water bait. It's a Zara Spook and I was learning how to use it today after work. After half an hour something hit it and that fish was taking my line real fast but I loosened the drag instead of tightening it and lost the fish. I was using a Dobyns 734C (my Spinnerbait rod) and a Chronarch E6 with 30lb Sufix 832. I read that Dobyns designed the 734c for Super Spooks but did he design it for Mono or Braid? I'm thinking Mono but I hate Mono and want to stay with braid. So should I get a 705CB Glass or set the drag correctly and stay with my Spinnerbait rod (734C)? I like the power of the 734C, it can toss a Zara Spook a mile. I was amazed how far that bait was flying through the air. Quote
bmlum415 Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 id stay with the 734c. thats what i use for my spook rod and frogs until i get the 735c. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 the 734 isn't necessarily designed for fishing spooks. it's also listed for fishing jigs. i don't want to fish jigs on the same rod i'm using for topwater. the techniques are a mere suggestion but doesn't necessarily mean it's the best tool for the job. the 4 power dobyns is more of the "do it all" power . if you are insistent of using braid /w any treble hook lures, the 704 or 705CB glass or composite is ten fold be a better option for fishing topwater and cranks than the 734. it will keep the fish buttoned so much the better. the tip on the 734 is obviously faster than the CB series but you are using braid so walking the bait will be that much easier. even if you were using mono, the CB series rods work so much better for fishing treble hook baits. if you want a frog rod, the 735C is a dynamite frog rod. Super User tomustang Posted November 7, 2013 Super User Posted November 7, 2013 A spook with go far on any rod. You said you had an accident so don't change your results entirely on that. Go back out and try it again with out loosening the drag so you know how it'll be. As a note, mono is usually what people use for throwing topwater Quote
