Stupid Question?

I have begun using braid with a FC leader on spinning gear for the first time as many have reccomended. Thought I would try it as I have always used mono before. I tie the leader to the braid with an Alberto knot. When I cast, I can hear and feel the knot pass through the guides of my St. Croix Avid spinning rod. Currently using 20lb. braid with a 10 lb. FC leader.

 

My questions are: Is this normal, will the "slapping" of the knot destroy the integrity of the knot or harm the guides of my rod, am I tying the knot properly, is casting distance effected becauseof this?

 

All replies are welcome as this has become very annoying.

Normal, knot will be fine.

Its normal, with this knot you can cut the tags ends as close to the knot as you can which will help. It won't cause any harm, except maybe to your sanity if it bugs you to hear it.

It drives me so nuts, I refuse to use a leader. I don't really believe a leader is necessary anyway. I have little to no issues with abrasion, I don't believe fluoro is invisible or even if it was that bass are spooked by seeing line. The added hassle of an extra knot and the reduction of casting distance makes this an easy choice for me.

As said above, it's normal.  As for losing casting distance, probably, but not much.  Neither of these little problems are significant enough to dissuade me from using a leader.

WHen I used braid,I always used a leader, especially in saltwater.  Now I only use braid for flipping applications and I tie straight with no leader.

cranks - fluoro

spinnerbaits - braid weeds / flouro open water

pitching rod - braid

spinning rod 1 - fluoro for open water / rocky bottoms

spinning rod 2 - braid for weedy / semi-weedy areas

thats what i do, when doing that you wont have to deal with leaders and you may buy a micro guide rod

This is another of one these issues where there is no right or wrong way to do it, it's whatever you want it to be.  I use braid and leader just about all the time, and I don't care for the knot coming thru the guide either.  I use swivels to attach my leaders, and my swivel is always going to be large enough as not to pass thru the top guide.  I do tie line to leader for certain species, when I do I keep my leaders on the the short side.  Putting on a fresh leader takes  me very little time.

They make a solution to seal the knot and make it safer. Its called UV Knot sense.

Maybe I am missing something but why not just use a shorter leader and don't reel the knot past the tip before you cast?

I use swivels so that I don't have to hear the knot passing through the guides.
