BostonMahhk Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Just yesterday I ordered a Dobyns 704C. Well talkin with them on the phone they told me that the action in their rods is very flexible. Right now I fish an stx on a veritas MH MFtip but the rod is extremely stiff and feels like a heavy extra fast tip. I bought this rod as my main rod cause I pig and jig most. I was gonna buy the Dobyns In a M fast tip but I want my dobyns to be my main rod so I ended up with a MH fast and decided to replace the veritas with something with more flex but I'm worried I'm gonna get my Dobyns and it be to flexible for jigging. I guess my point is I'd like to know how you feel about the action in the dobyns rods. Idk how many you own or what flex you have but in your opinion do you think a fast tip is to flexible for throwing 3/8oz-3/4oz jigs into moderate to light heavy cover?Basically my veritas is perfect for this but like I said earlier, I'd like my dobyns to be the main rod for this. Btw, the veritas is 6'6" and I ordered the dobyns in 7' which I'd also prefer for jigging. I bought the veritas thinking it was gonna be the most expensive rod I bought, boy was I wrong but now I'm completely confused, especially never fishing a dobyns. Can I get some opinions on what I should do? I'm on my way to Bass Pro now! Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 5, 2013 Super User Posted November 5, 2013 In the Champion line the 704C is good to about 3/8 of oz + trailer. If you want to fish jigs with a champion rod in the 4 power I would recommend the 734C, but based on what you have said I believe the new 735C may be the correct choice for baits heavier than 3/8oz. Also keep in mind that comparing Abu rods to others is not going to be apples to apples, the Abu rods fish heavier in action and power than they are rated (IMHO) Quote
Arv Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I feel like the actions of all the dobyns rods ive fished have been crisp. Obviously the higher up you go, the better quality, but even the tip on the savvy is nice imo. I found the veritas rods to be heavier and stiffer than rated from my experience. Still a good rod for the money, but I think youre definitely taking a step up regardless of which line you picked. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 5, 2013 Super User Posted November 5, 2013 the 704 is good to about 3/8 and trailer as stated above. if you are constantly fishing some sort of cover /w jigs in the 3/8+ range, the 5 power would be the a much better rod. for 3/8-3/4 in any sort of cover. i don't know what series you got, but i love the DX745 for what you stated. the 4 power is more of what i use for plastics. BostonMahhk Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 I actually want my dobyns to feel like my veritas in terms of stiffmess Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 then you want the 5 power. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 then you want the 5 power. Agreed. The Veritas rods have heavier actions than what is printed. A 5 power Champion will be close to the MH Veritas. Quote
BostonMahhk Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 The 5 is mag heavy. d**n. I got the 703C Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 I have the 703C it is a nice rod, but will be severely under powered for anything above 3/8 oz total weight. It fishes like a med power rod in my experience. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 The 5 is mag heavy. d**n. I got the 703C the 3 power is a good medium action rod. sadly, you won't enjoy fishing it for your intended purposes. i use the DX743 for senkos or 1/8oz trigs and a 733 for 1/4oz swim jigs and up to 1/2oz spinner baits. BostonMahhk Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Will I be a lot better off with the 704? I mainly throw 3/8-1/2 oz jigs Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 Will I be a lot better off with the 704? I mainly throw 3/8-1/2 oz jigs I have a 733 and anything over 3/8-1/2oz total weight is pushing it limits. I use my 733 for 1/4-3/8 shakey head tubes and jigs. Remember the 1/2oz jig is the head only. Add the hook, skirt and trailer your looking at 3/4 and up. The 4 power Champion rods are a fantastic light to medium cover rod for 1/2 & up jigs. If your in seriously heavy cover you want to jump up to a 5 power. Quote
BostonMahhk Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Maybe someone can answer this for me. I have a 6'6" veritas mh. Like I said, I wanna replace that with the dobyns and change the veritas for somethin with more flex. The only one they got with the flex I want is the winch series and it's a M mod. Now all that's perfect for me except the lure rating on it starts at 3/8. If I'm buying a M rod I want it to handle throwing 1/4oz. How come the reg veritas M is 1/4-1 and the winch series veritas M is 3/8-3/4? Does the moderate tip on the winch affect it that much or can I get away with throwing 1/4 oz with it cause Abu runs stiffer? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 6, 2013 Super User Posted November 6, 2013 you can get by with a 4 power fishing up to 1/2oz jigs but that's really it's limit.if you have to pull bass from brush or anything of that matter, a 5 power will be better suited for your needs. by everything you've described and where you will be fishing, you will want the 5 power. especially if you liked how stiff the Veritas was. the winch series is for crankbaits. it has a parabolic bend that is ideal for keeping fish hooked /w treble hooks. it's not a good fit for using jigs/plastics. i don't fish the veritas rods so i can't comment on it's lure ratings specifically. i can't imagine any Medium/moderate cranking rod not being able to throw a 1/4oz crankbait.
