Scotty58 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I just recently got real into baitcasting and spinning reels. I do pretty good with each, don't really get back lashes with baitcasters anymore. My problem with them is I seem to get a lot of little knots, or a loop of line tangled over my actually line going out to the lure in my reel. Happens on every reel I have. I've tried different ways of spooling the line onto the reel and still get it. I mainly use seaguar fluorocarbon. Is there something im not doing or doing wrong? any help would be appreciated! starting to get frustrated!. Thanks! Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 5, 2013 Super User Posted November 5, 2013 Scotty, can you take another whack at what is going on? The way I interpret your post is that you get "knots or loops" in the line when you spool it onto a baitcaster and spinning reel? Which type of reel if not both? Thanks for the clarification. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 5, 2013 Global Moderator Posted November 5, 2013 Is this happening after a cast or just after you spool up? I doubt anyone who has ever used a baitcaster hasn't gotten the little V shaped loops over their mainline after a backlash. Usually you can pull on the V shaped loop and it will pop loose. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 5, 2013 Super User Posted November 5, 2013 Blue, you are correct. But is Scotty telling us that the gets the "loops" when he is spooling his reels? If so he is allowing way too much slack in the line so the line is not spooling onto the reel in a "snug" manner. If Scotty comes back to this post maybe we need to suggest he purchase one of those Berkley Spooling Stations so that he can spool his baitcasters properly and subscribe to Glenn's YouTube videos on how to spool a spinning reel. Anyone else interpret what Scotty is asking if Blue and I are off base? Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 5, 2013 Super User Posted November 5, 2013 use mono Red, mono run through KVD Lure and Line Conditioner!!! Good idea. Quote
quanjig Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I will occasionally have this happen, particularly when throwing light lures on higher speed retrieve reels. Get some line conditioner and try some softer floro. Seems that the HS reel and light bait just kind of drops the line on the spool too loosely and the following cast fluffs at the end! You might have to try some other lines and IPT reels to correct your problems. Quote
Got1Fishing Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 These guys have good comments. If he means during a cast, maybe you could have toouch Lin spooled, or might not har the brake system up enough. Maybe it's a hair too low. Quote
Smokinal Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 If it's with a spinning reel, I heard pros mention this tip and I started doing it and never had line twists, loops, knots etc anymore. Learn to close the bail by hand and not by turning the handle. I'm not quite sure why this works but it does. It takes a little while to get comfortable doing it but now it's just habit. 1 Quote
Scotty58 Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Sorry fellas for not getting back sooner. Been busy. But this is happening mainly just with my baitcasters and after I cast. I have two methods of spooling line on, don't know which one is best. Sometimes ill put the spool in the middle of my vise in my garage with a pencil through it and taped down and spool it that way. The other way my dad said he had always heard pros do is just lay it down and spool on some and when it starts to twist, flip the spool over and continue till it twists then flip again and so on. Its like what BlueBasser said, I get those V-shaped loops over my main line so when I cast it just stops my cast way short. Is there any way to prevent them or are those just a thing to get used to with baitcasters? Quote
Scotty58 Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 And I set up my reel like I believe most people do. I reel the lure up till its a few inches from the end of my rod and I adjust the spool control till the lure slowly falls. Then I adjust the brake half way. The reels I use are Bass pro pro qualifier, Quantum KVD crankin classic, Bass pro carbonlite, Quantum Accurist PT. I keep tight tension on the line with my fingers while I spool and I do use KVD line conditioner. Quote
Scotty58 Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Haha and that's exactly what my dad said, is to just use mono. I 25 and he is 58. He used to fish tournaments in a local bass club when I was little and that was when mono was mainly the only thing used. Me being younger and with flouro being the new thing I think I need to use it but if this is what it does on baitcasters than I might go to mono. But I may try some other brands other than Seaguar first. For some reason that's the main line I use, that and Berkley Vanish flouro. Quote
Reptile360 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I had some problems with Vicious flouro a while back. Every cast was a nightmare! I haven't had a single problem since I switched back to mono. Quote
