drew4779 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 My story is weirdly similar to Darren. Started when I was in 6th grade. Took lessons for a couple months, just long enough to learn to read music and the basic chords, and went by myself from there. Cut my middle finger with electric hedge trimmers about 10 years ago and the scar tissue made it very difficult to play. I pick it up every now and then but get frustrated very quickly when I start playing a song I could play in my sleep and can't remember the progression. I tried learn every genre I could and the last time I played seriously I was playing in a reggae band in college. I thought about digging it out of the closet the other day after watching Andy Griffith pick away on his front porch while watching daytime tv over the holidays. Maybe this post is a sign. Quote

Buckeye Ron Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Been playing acoustic guitar since the mid 70's. Mostly self taught and from playing with others in church. As a teenager I was hooked on Hendrix,Clapton, and Johnny Winter. Later started liking blues players like SRV,Albert Lee,and Joe B. Now I just play whatever I like but it's usually something country or bluesy. I used to wheel and deal in guitars and at one time had quite a collection. Now I'm down to a few that I plan to pass on one day. 1 Quote
Arobb2012 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I've played guitar off and on for 20 years. For the last year I haven't played but the guitar bug is bitting at me since it is to cold to fish and I don't ice fish. Quote

They guy is the real deal. Joe is one of the most prolific players in the world today. Produces music like water flows. Great talent! Great artist! Great music. I get every album and bootleg of his I can find. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 How did you guys learn barre chords? I am blasting through learning the guitar but I'm at a brick wall when it comes to barre chords, I try all kinds of different angles and positions but the G, B, and e strings are muted and its so hard for me to get them to ring out right... Do I just not have the finger strength yet, is it something I'll just need to wait on and get in time or am I probably just not using the right technique? I've watched videos and stuff on it but its still hard for me to do them... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 You will develop finger strength and dexterity with practice. You might want a tech to take a look at the setup as well - might be too high. You can drop down a gauge for strings, but really you should be able to play it with any gauge. 1 Quote

I've watched videos and stuff on it but its still hard for me to do them... Two things: if you're playing an acoustic guitar you must have it set up by a pro in order to get the action just right. Lowering the string height at the nut is super critical,as is the proper saddle height. The proper neck relief is also critical. Secondly, practice practice practice. If your fingers and hand muscles are a bit weak just keep going and before you know it you'll be there! Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted January 13, 2016 Super User Posted January 13, 2016 I'm mainly playing acoustic because electric doesn't interest me much right now... Thanks for the tips guys! Quote
Kidflex Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Stumbled on this post. Glad to see a bunch of other musicians on this site. I've been playing guitar for many years and I should be way better than I am! Just like bass fishing it's an addictive passion. I've been through many guitars and amps but this is my current big amp set up. Funny thing is I mostly play on a fender blues deville 4x10 with pedal board. 1 Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted February 20, 2016 Super User Posted February 20, 2016 I used to love it, like you I too picked it up at a young age, my influences then were my uncle and my dad, Chet Atkins was my first impressionable guitarist who I could only wish to have played like, then along came the likes of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and such, from there as I grew up it became southern rock, 38 special, Molly Hatchet, Lynard Skynard, I picked some others like Rush, Van Halen, AC/DC, Bad Company SRV, and then there was the hair bands and haven't really picked up anything else since 3 Doors down, have not really picked it up much at all since then either but I really enjoyed my time with the guitar. Super User J Francho Posted February 22, 2016 Super User Posted February 22, 2016 Not a guitar, but here's the new trap set. Took about 6 months to special order and build. Packs up in about 20 minutes, and sets up in about 35. I can preset the rack for shows, and be set up ready to mic on stage in about 10 minutes. It's huge, but way faster than conventional tripod based hardware. The drums are Pear Masterworks, shells are birch, and the finish is lacquer. In the background, you can see the Gretsch bebop kit. There's also a Tama kit, and a DW kit upstairs. Various cymbals from UFIP, Sabian, Dream, Wuhan, Zildjian, and Istanbul. 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Trey Anastasio and Jake Cinninger are my two favorite guitarists. Both of those guys are monsters!!! Just saw Umphrey's Mcgee in Asheville NC over the weekend..2 nights of them blowing the roof off of the US Cellular Center. Always incredible. Jake and the band were in great form as usual. Matt Jalbert from Tauk is pretty sick too. Those guys opened up on Saturday night and crushed it..crazy good stuff. Quote
