BadBassWV Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Do any of you guys remove the front hook off your crankbaits. I read it or thought about removing the front hook to see if it would come across the tops of weed beds without getting hung in the grass as easy. If anyone is doing it or tried it let me no what you think. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted October 1, 2010 Super User Posted October 1, 2010 getting hung up in the grass is a great pattern for me this time of the year. Quote
Super User deep Posted October 1, 2010 Super User Posted October 1, 2010 I never tried removing any of the trebles, but if I were to remove either of them, I'd remove the one at the back. When I get a good strike on a crank/ topwater, the bass is hooked by the belly treble. In fact I once read a rather interesting article about a crankbait specialist. He kept throwing different colors/sizes until he started caching bass hooked by the belly treble. That was the right color and size for the crank pattern that day. Quote
NateFollmer Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 I never removed any hooks and left them off, but I do usually remove the 'default' hooks and replace them with ones that are 1 size bigger. I'll even go 1 size bigger on the back and up too 2 or 3 sizes bigger on the belly (depends on the crank). I don't really think removing either hook is going to keep grass off your crank. Switch to a soft swimbait and rig it weedless. It will slide right through the grass. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 1, 2010 Super User Posted October 1, 2010 Some cranks are better at fishing grass than others. You want to look for a bait that backs up and rises on the pause. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Dont be discouraged when you get hung up....In fact thats when i get 1/2 my strikes. When you feel your crank catch either 1) let it float up, then continue to reel 2) rip through the weeks, float up, then crank... Another thing to think about is the depth your crank dives to. Remember, don't judge what depth to use based on the depth to the bottom of the lake, you want that crank ticking the top of that weedline. Keep the hooks on Quote
