GaterB Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Hey guys. I have a cousin who just turned 11 and wants to start using a baitcaster. He's really accurate with his spincast reel but wants to step up to what me and my uncle use. He'll be pairing it with a 6'6" Lightning Rod Shock. I was wondering what reel you guys think would be easiest for him to learn on? The budget is probably maxed out around the 100 dollar mark. Quote
The Rooster Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 BPS Pro Qualifier. Dual braking makes casting almost thumbless. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 Citica hands down in that price range. It's by far the most user friendly. Quote
The Rooster Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 You'd have to find a Citica on sale. It's retail is $130. PQ at full price is only $100 and goes on sale for $70 - $80 several times a year. Of course I'm assuming new. I keep forgetting the flea market here. I even just sold a Citica in it for well under $100. Doh! 1 Quote
BenBassmaster Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I would go with something with magnetic brakes, just because the dual breaking system is a bit harder to learn. Centrifugal breaks would be fine too, but I suggest the magnetic brakes because they were easier for me to learn. Since his budget is $100, I suggest the Lew's Speed Spool ($99). It's at his budget mark, but it will last him a long time. Quote

You could spend even less and get an H20 Mettle when they go on sale for like $30. Sweet reel for the money. 1 Quote

Sweet reel for the money. X2 on the Mettle. I bought one just because they have great reviews and they were on sale for $30. I don't have more than a couple months use on it but I've been really impressed so far. It casts a mile and is really easy to set up and use. You can feel that it's more plastic than a higher end reel but as long as he isn't putting braid on it and trying to haul big fish out of heavy cover it shouldn't matter. They do scuff pretty easy but it doesn't effect the usability of the reel. The BPS Pro Qualifier would be an easy second choice and will probably last a lot longer. Quote
Arv Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Id pick the pq as well. I learned on dual brakes and am really glad I did. To me, soley mag brakes can be tough to dial in. Only cent brakes would be my choice between the 2, but if i can have both on the reel, especially for 100 or less, ill take both. Not only is the pq a great reel to learn on, it will be something that will last, or at the very least, have resale value, as opposed to some of the other lower priced reels. Quote

Academy had the mettle on clearance for $29 last time I was in the store. I bring one anytime I take someone new to give them a shot at throwing a casting reel. Quote
Jon G Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I agree with a Lews Speed Spool as well for just 100 bucks it is super smooth and is perfect for begginers. 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 All good choices, whatever he chooses if it comes in a box make sure he opens it up and tests it before he buys it, make sure it doesn't grind and all the parts work before he purchases it. Don't go for just the feel of the display model, sometimes reels come in bad batches and the packaged one might be it. 1 Quote
Brian6428 Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Abu Garcia Silver Max. Only has magnetic brakes, but I didn't have any trouble learning on mine. I would suggest he learn with braid, though. Makes backlashes much easier to get out. Brian Quote
